Once, in a distant place in the northwest called Asmaparanta, the princes, along with their armies, went to subdue a rebellious king named Elephant Ear. Just as that king was about to be subdued, the star-guarding woman said to Ashoka, "The time for the gods to grant a favor is now. Please grant me the kingdom for seven days." Ashoka agreed, and she wrote a letter saying, "Pluck out the eyes of Kunala," stole the king's seal, stamped it on the letter, and sent a messenger to Asmaparanta. The king there read the letter but couldn't bear to pluck out Kunala's eyes. At that time, Kunala himself read the letter and, knowing it was the king's order, began to pluck out his eyes. When one eye was plucked out, he said, "Like this, put my eye in my hand." Previously, an Arhat had known that this would happen and constantly remembered the meaning of the Dharma of impermanence. Therefore, seeing that eye, he attained the Stream-enterer fruit as a result. After that, he left his servants, took a lute, and went from place to place, eventually arriving at the elephant enclosure in Pataliputra. The elephant Jangshih recognized him and paid homage. The people did not recognize him, and at dawn, the elephant keepers said, "Play the lute." So he played the lute with the Gama-ka melody, and the king heard it from the top of the palace, thinking it sounded like his son's voice. When it dawned, he investigated and confirmed it was him. After investigating the reason, the king became furious and ordered the star-guarding woman to be locked in a firewood house and burned to death. He was wealthy and prosperous, and he regarded the Three Jewels as his teachers. He was urged by a deity in a dream while sleeping, saying: Tomorrow, a bhikṣu will come to your house to collect alms, and he is powerful and has great magical abilities, so he is able to gather all the noble ones from all directions. Make a request to him. The next morning, the Arhat Buṣyadin came to his house, and he made a request to him. He gathered about eighty thousand noble ones, and they held a festival for three years. The gods who rejoiced in the teachings rained down jewels in his house. He also satisfied hundreds of thousands of beggars every day for as long as he lived. This is the eighth story of the time of King Ashoka. After that, the Arhat known as Light Protector, who was born in the northern country of Gandhara, performed the activities of the teachings in three ways, benefiting sentient beings. The son of King Ashoka, King Brave Army, through the consort of Vaiśravaṇa, the goddess Glorious Accomplishment, had inexhaustible wealth without causing any harm to sentient beings. He made offerings to all the bhikṣus of the four directions, and for three years, he made offerings to all the stupas on the earth with hundreds of offerings. At that time, in Bhogada, a Brahmin named Gragdana, who was very devoted to the teachings, built a monastery called Reed Forest. The Arhat Yulana taught the Dharma, and many bhikṣus from all directions gathered together, and they also established a great festival for hundreds of thousands of bhikṣus. At that time, in a certain region of the country of Maruṭa, there was a merchant's son named Mahadeva, who had killed his parents and an Arhat, committing the three deeds of immediate retribution. He became disgusted with his own sins and went to Kashmir, completely concealing his behavior, and became a bhikṣu, and because he was intelligent, he mastered the Tripitaka.
