Seventy-seventh, Throwing the Stone: After that, (the Buddha) went to the land of wickedness. There, on the side of the road, was a very large and extremely hard stone that people had to walk around. The five hundred giants of the land of wickedness thought, "If we could move this stone to another place or completely destroy it, the road would become smooth and our reputation would be great." So, the five hundred giants tried various methods to move or destroy the stone, but they could neither move it nor destroy it. At that time, the Blessed One came there and said, "What are you people doing here?" (They) replied, "If we could make this road better by throwing away this stone, that would be great." "Then, shall I throw it away?" "Please throw it away!" Then, the Blessed One threw the stone into the sky with the thumb of his right foot until it was unbearable to look at. The giants were frightened and terrified. The Buddha ground the stone into powder in the sky, and then it fell down. (They) asked, "Where did this dust come from?" (The Buddha) replied, "It is from that stone." "That's terrible!" "Then, shall I restore it to its original state?" "Please restore it!" As soon as the words were spoken, there was no obstacle on the road, and the dust nearby stuck together and became the same stone as before. After that, the giants asked, "With what power did the Blessed One throw that stone?" (The Buddha) replied, "It was with the power born from my parents." "With what did you grind it into powder?" "It was with the power of miracles." "With what did you restore it to its original state?" "It was with the power of faith." "Is there a power greater than these three powers?" "Yes, with the power of merit, I destroyed thirty-six billion demons." "Are there others?" "Yes, with the power of wisdom, I completely destroyed all defilements." "Are there others?" "Yes, with the power of miracles, I destroyed the six heretical teachers." "Are there others?" "Yes, with the power of impermanence, I will pass into nirvana under the twin sala trees." "Look at the decline of the lifespan and strength of people today! This stone is the height of the people of the first kalpa, and there are even handprints!" Thus he taught. After that, (the Buddha) taught the Dharma to the five hundred giants who were proud of their strength, and they all attained the stream-entry.

At this time, the measure of strength resulting from father and mother is: ordinary men and elephants are not blue elephants, elephant cubs, mother elephants, ordinary elephants, tuskless elephants, blue-yellow-white-red elephants, piercing elephants, fragrant elephants, the powerful and extremely sharp, the greatest strength. The former is ten times the strength of the latter. Twenty great strengths are the strength of the son of no desire, that strength is in every joint and every small joint. Thus it is said. Eighth, Nyagrodha village and so on: Then, he went to Nyagrodha village. A girl who had been sent there as a bride from Serkya saw the Teacher coming and, having faith, thought that if he accepted alms, she should offer them. The Teacher said, "Offer it." She also thought that the Teacher knew my mind and offered it with even more faith. There, he made a smile, etc., which was the same as usual, and prophesied that he would be called the Self-Buddha of Utmost Goodness. The girl's husband, a Brahmin, heard the story and came home and asked about it. The girl also told him. He went to the Teacher and asked, "Is it true that you prophesied to my attendant?" He replied, "It is true." "Do you lie for the sake of a little food?" "Brahmin, have you seen anything wonderful?" He replied, "Yes, to the east of this village, under the branches of the Nyagrodha tree, five hundred chariots can pass without touching." "Then how big is its seed?" "About a quarter of a mustard seed." He replied, "Likewise, I also see great fruit from a small cause." There, he showed his face covered with his tongue and asked, "Does the Wheel-Turning King lie?" He replied, "No." There, the Brahmin developed faith, and the Teacher taught him the Dharma, and he saw the truth. Then, he went to Kapilavastu and urged the Venerable Kapila three times to listen to the Dharma, but he said nothing. Then he spoke of the four mindfulnesses to Ananda and stayed in a hut made of leaves in the forest of Kapilavastu. The uncle of the son of Maudgalyayana was on a nearby mountain. The Teacher said to the son of Maudgalyayana, "Think of your uncle." Then, the son of Maudgalyayana went to the hermitage where the Brahmin ascetic lived. There, the uncle said, "Ascetic, do not stay here. This is the place of the Brahmins."
