Each story in between also tells a story of similar causes from the past. Devadatta, oppressed by suffering, thought, "I have done a very meaningless thing by throwing stones, and I have not been able to kill Gautama, and everyone feels it, listing me as an evil person." Eighty-first, the story of taming the mad elephant: The Blessed One was staying in the Light Garden of Rajagriha (王舍城). King Ajatashatru (未生怨王) had an elephant named Protector of Wealth, who was the son of a dragon elephant, very strong and difficult to tame, and every time he was released, he would kill many people and livestock. It was not released every day, and if it was to be released the next day, everyone would be informed that night. A wealthy householder in Rajagriha invited the Buddha and the Sangha to come for alms the next morning, and the Buddha accepted. Devadatta heard this and gave the elephant trainer a pearl necklace worth one million gold coins, saying, "Tomorrow, when the Shramana Gautama comes, release the elephant Protector of Wealth." The trainer said, "I will do as you say, but please be careful." Devadatta also informed King Ajatashatru, who said, "Haven't you heard that the Blessed One can tame the untamed?" Devadatta said, "If so, he should tame me first. It is not taming the untamed, but releasing the elephant Protector of Wealth." He also agreed and informed the trainer, and the next day the elephant Protector of Wealth was released, and it was announced: "Everyone be careful to protect yourselves." The householder thought, "I am unlucky, having invited the Buddha once, and now this has happened." But he still prepared the food and took it up to offer. The next morning, he went to ask the Buddha, who said that the Tathagata has no fear of elephants, and the householder left very happily. At that time, the Blessed One was going to Rajagriha with five hundred monks, and the elephant Protector of Wealth was released. It strode proudly, roared loudly, and ran with all its might towards the Buddha. Devadatta and King Ajatashatru were watching from the top of the palace.

Ugra! Devadatta was very happy, looking at the elephant Dhanapala and saying, "You are overwhelmed by the power of the elephant. Shakya's son, you are now with the Shravakas, there is no hope." After saying that, the Blessed One said, "Now look at the power of the one with the ten powers, the one with wonderful power!" After saying that, he transformed five maned lions from the five fingers of his right hand, and just by smelling that scent, Dhanapala was so frightened that he ran away in confusion. Seeing flames burning in all directions, he could not find a place to escape. Knowing that only the place where the Blessed One was was peaceful, he slowly went to the feet of the Blessed One. There, the other five hundred monks, seeing the angry elephant, fled in four directions. Only the noble Ananda was alone in front of the Teacher. Then, the Blessed One stroked the elephant Dhanapala with his hand and said, "You acted improperly before, so you were born as an animal. Now you are killing other beings again, where will you be born?" and so on, he preached the Dharma, saying, "Have faith in me, and you will be liberated from the birth of an animal." After saying that. After that, that elephant developed great faith in the Buddha, and followed the Blessed One with great joy. When the Teacher went to that householder's house, it also stood at the door. Because it did not see the Teacher, it began to destroy the house. The Teacher transformed that house into the nature of crystal, and saw his own body very clearly, and happily looked at it. There, he accepted offerings with the Sangha. After dedicating the merits, when returning, the elephant Dhanapala also followed the Teacher. There, Ajatashatru said, "Before, the kings of other countries could not harm me because of the power of this elephant, now you have made it gone." So he blamed Devadatta. After that, the king said, "For the gate of the city wall, put the elephant on the gate." After doing so, the elephant Dhanapala, because he did not see the Buddha, wrapped his own trunk around his own feet, and then died. Immediately after death, he was reborn as a god of the Four Great Kings' race, and came to the Teacher to make offerings. After hearing the Dharma, he saw the truth. At those times, the Blessed One went to the city of Rajagriha every day.
