When one to five hundred elephants were tied there by attaching a rope to a golden basin, the Bodhisattva held the edge of the golden basin with the tip of his left hand, and as a result, all five hundred elephants faced backwards and were pulled by (the Bodhisattva's) hand. Thinking, 'If I can pull five hundred elephants with just my left hand, wouldn't I be able to pull a thousand elephants with both hands?' At that time, he was named 'Having the Strength of a Thousand Elephants.' Ninth, studying the arts and crafts: After that, the Bodhisattva, together with five hundred attendants, went to the writing academy of the writing teacher Little Worm Armor or All Good Friends. He wrote a letter and offered it, (the Bodhisattva said,) 'I know this, tell me something else.' He also wrote and offered up to five hundred kinds of letters, but the result was the same. He said, 'The world only uses these letters, I don't know any others.' After that, the Bodhisattva wrote a letter and showed it to him, but he didn't recognize it. (The Bodhisattva) said, 'This letter will only flourish in the world when Bodhisattvas and Wheel-Turning Kings appear.' At that time, the god Brahma also said from the sky, 'It is indeed so.' After that, the Bodhisattva went to the residence of the arithmetic teacher Scale Accomplished. All the arithmetic knowledge he showed, the Bodhisattva already knew. The Bodhisattva spoke of countless numbers and arithmetic knowledge that he didn't even understand a little bit. Similarly, for his own uncle Good Acquisition, learning to ride elephants, etc.; for the archery teacher, the god, etc., learning the five places of archery, etc., the mechanisms of weapons. The Bodhisattva, however, did not need to look at what the teachers taught, and could understand it himself. And the five hundred Shakya youths all received good learning and became proficient. Among them, the five places of archery are: shooting from afar, shooting at sound, shooting at vital points, shooting without missing the target, and shooting with great force. When five hundred youths came forth, and Devadatta felled the other Shakya youths with his strength, the Bodhisattva went to that direction. Devadatta seized them with his hand and flung them far away without harm, so that they fell supine with their feet pointing upwards. This is stated in the Manifestation Sutra. Then, the Licchavis of Vaishali found an elephant with auspicious marks. They sent a messenger, saying, 'The son of Shuddhodana will become a Chakravartin. This precious elephant has appeared through his power, so it should be offered to him alone.' The messenger went to Kapilavastu and waited at the palace gate with the elephant. Devadatta came out and saw it, and asked, 'What is this sacred elephant?' They told him the story as before, and Devadatta became jealous. He slapped them and said, 'Are you offering the elephant before he becomes a Chakravartin?' Then he killed the elephant. Ananda saw this and thought, 'Devadatta has shown his power, and I will show mine too.' So he grabbed the elephant's tail, dragged it about seven steps, and threw it aside. Then the Bodhisattva came and saw what had happened, and asked them about it. They told him the story in detail as before. The Bodhisattva thought, 'I should also demonstrate my power.' So he grabbed the elephant's tail with his hand, lifted it up, and flung it far away. It passed over seven rows of iron walls and seven rows of moats, and fell about a yojana away. The ground in that place was hollowed out, and it was called 'Elephant Pit,' and a stupa was built there. Then the youths went to the forest to show their skill in cutting trees with swords, and the Bodhisattva also went there. When the others cut the trees, the cuts were uneven, and they fell as soon as they were cut. The Bodhisattva's cuts were even and without crookedness, so they did not fall but remained standing as before. The other Shakyas saw this and thought, 'The Bodhisattva cannot cut the trees,' and mocked him, saying, 'He does not know the art of cutting.'
