The twelfth story is about the Tree of Good Heart: When, by the nature of Dharma, the Buddha appears in the world, a tree called the Tree of Good Heart will arise. Therefore, between the city of Kapilavastu and the grove, on the bank of the Rohita River, this Tree of Good Heart appeared. It grows eighty cubits in a single day. What grows today can be cut with a fingernail before sunrise the next day, but afterwards it cannot be cut even with a sword, nor can it be burned by fire. From time to time, floods would erode the soil around the tree's roots, and occasionally it would be blown over by the wind, blocking the river. This caused a shortage of water in the grove, while Kapilavastu suffered from excessive water. The people there tried to uproot the tree, but they could not move it. King Well-Awakened sent a messenger to King Śuddhodana, reporting, "If it is known that the young prince has power, it would be appropriate for him to see the fallen tree." King Lekpai Rapsé dispatched a large crowd of people, and they began to cut down trees, making a great noise. The Bodhisattva heard this and asked the attendant, who told him in detail what had happened. Then, the Bodhisattva went with the young men to cut down the tree. When they arrived at the tree, a venomous snake emerged from a hole near the tree. Fearing that the snake would harm the Bodhisattva, the attendant struck the snake with his sword, cutting it in half at the waist. The snake's breath hit the attendant, turning his skin black, and he became known as 'Black Attendant.' Then, the young men of the Shakya clan began to cut down the tree. Devadatta tried hard and made the tree shake a little. Nanda lifted the tree a little. No one else could do more than that. The Bodhisattva lifted the tree with one hand and threw it into the sky, and the tree broke in the middle, becoming two pieces that fell on opposite sides of the river. The Bodhisattva pressed the chariot with his toe, and the horses and other drivers could not pull the chariot, and the chariot remained motionless. The Bodhisattva looked at the Earth-Protecting Woman and, feeling affection, turned the iron arrow in his hand into powder. She also looked at the Bodhisattva and, feeling affection, inadvertently touched the top of the palace with her toe, and the roof was pierced. A large crowd of people saw this and said, 'This woman has won the heart of the young man.'
