He is able to teach.' After hearing this, King Śuddhodana took the goddess Earth-born Mother and her twenty thousand attendants as the consort of the Bodhisattva. The fourteenth, the cause of definitely renouncing the world, is: Then, at another time, the Bodhisattva said to the charioteer: 'Hey, charioteer, quickly prepare a good horse! We are going to the garden.' The charioteer also obeyed the command and prepared as instructed. When the time came, the Bodhisattva mounted the chariot, and on the way, he saw an old and hunched person walking with a cane. The Bodhisattva asked the charioteer: 'What is this?' The charioteer replied: 'O god, this is called old age, and before long, he will die.' 'Oh, then am I also not exempt from the law of old age?' 'O god, you are also not exempt from the law of old age.' The Bodhisattva commanded: 'Turn the chariot around, we are going back to the palace.' Then, after returning to the palace, the Bodhisattva thought: 'Look, I am also not exempt from old age.' Then, King Śuddhodana asked the charioteer: 'Does the prince enjoy going to the garden?' The charioteer explained the previous situation in detail, and the king thought: 'Will the words of the diviners not come true? This prince may renounce the world. I should give him a great deal of the five desirable qualities, so that he will not renounce the world.' So he entertained the Bodhisattva with all kinds of desires. Then, again, just like before, he rode in the chariot and went to the garden. He saw a sick person suffering from illness, a pale, thin person, and asked: 'What is this?' The charioteer replied: 'O god, this is called being sick.' 'Am I also not exempt from the nature of illness?' 'O god, you are also not exempt from the nature of illness.' Again, he went to the palace and thought: 'Look, I am also not exempt from illness.' Then, he was entertained with the five desirable qualities, as before. Again, the Bodhisattva mounted the chariot and went to the garden. He saw people carrying a corpse on a stretcher, covered with cloth, with a torch in front, and many people walking in front, with mourners following behind. The Bodhisattva asked: 'What is this?' The charioteer replied: 'O god, this is called death.' 'Am I also not exempt from the nature of death?' 'O god, you will also die.'

He did not transcend the law of birth. Again, he went to the palace, thinking, "I am also one who has not transcended the law of death." From "..." to "bewitched by all the merits of desire" is the same as before. Then, the gods of the Pure Abodes thought: "This Bodhisattva has the power of cause, but even the great power of cause depends on conditions, so we should urge him to renounce." So they emanated a renunciate, with shorn hair and wearing reddish-brown robes, going for alms from house to house. Then, as before, the Bodhisattva rode in a chariot to the base of the garden. He saw a renunciate, with shorn hair and wearing reddish-brown robes, carrying a begging bowl in his hand, walking along. "What is this? This god is a renunciate, disciplined, virtuous, and so on. Then turn the chariot in this direction." He also said, "As you command," and went in that direction. The Bodhisattva asked him, and he explained in detail the circumstances of renunciation. The Bodhisattva
