Sometimes he would come and go in the form of an elephant, sometimes in the form of a horse, sometimes as a boy, a girl, or various kinds of birds, and he would also sit on a seat in the form of a monk. Sometimes he would transform into a boy with a golden belt, frolicking on the lap of Ajatashatru, and when Ajatashatru spat on him, he would swallow it. Then Ajatashatru thought, "Devadatta's magic is greater than the Teacher's." As before, when Devadatta came and went, Ajatashatru would greet him with about five hundred chariots and gifts, and offer about five hundred cooked meals. Once, Devadatta thought, "I should win over the retinue of the Blessed One." Also, the monks said to Devadatta, "If all your prosperity comes from the Radiant One with the Ten Powers, why don't you go to him?" He said, "These are achieved by my own effort; what use is he to me?" Thus, because of not being grateful to the teacher and generating the evil thought of dividing the Sangha, Devadatta's magic immediately disappeared, and he had no power to restore it. However, Devadatta himself did not know for a while that he had lost his magic. Eighth, the reconciliation of the Sangha's division: Then, at another time, Devadatta thought, "This Blessed One has become old, perhaps he will entrust the fourfold retinue or half of the retinue to me." In order to ask for the retinue, he set out to go to the Blessed One. There was a monk named Nokchen who was born as a Brahma god, and when he knew this, he told Maugalyayana's son, who was living on Crocodile Killing Child Mountain, urging him to report it to the Teacher. He also went by means of magic and reported it. Then, seeing Devadatta and his friends Kokalika and the other four monks coming from afar, the Blessed One instructed Maugalyayana's son to keep his word, and Maugalyayana's son returned to his former place. Not long after, Devadatta arrived at the

Having paid homage to the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan, being old and frail, forgot to impart teachings to the fourfold assembly. If the Sangha were entrusted to me, one could abide in ease with minimal effort. Thus he requested. The Blessed One, considering that it was not the time for gentle persuasion, said: I would not entrust the Sangha even to Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, who are like excellent vases. How could I entrust it to you, who are foolish, like a corpse, and eat snot? Thereupon, Devadatta arose with fierce anger, shook his head three times, thinking, 'I shall retaliate,' and then departed. Then, the Teacher instructed Ananda: Ananda, having gathered the monks, said: Whoever holds a pure view of the Dharma and Vinaya that have been wrongly expounded should not associate with them. Now I shall speak to you, having subdued and overpowered you. Endure the path of words, and so forth, instructing them not to follow the wrong path. At that time, Devadatta consulted with four fellow monks, saying: If we can divide the Sangha, we will be prosperous in this life, and after death, it will be widely known that we did so even to the powerful Gautama. Some said that the Sangha could not be divided, while others said that it could be done by providing requisites to the elder monks and gathering the younger monks with clamor. Thus they did. The Blessed One went from Rajagriha to the vicinity of Rigaya. King Bimbisara filled about five hundred carts with ripe rice stalks enclosed in husks and offered them to the Blessed One. Devadatta, seeing this, said to Ajatashatru: When I also come wandering with many followers, treat me as the king now treats Gautama. Ajatashatru also agreed. The Sangha does not split when the Tathagata has just appeared in the world, at the end of his life, at the time when the supreme pair has not been shown, at the time when there are no faults in the view of the doctrine and discipline, and at the time when boundaries have not been set. At that time, the wheel of Dharma has been turned for some time, and the end of life has not yet befallen oneself,

There are also excellent pairs. Since faults in discipline and views have also arisen, it is now a time when the Sangha can be divided. Because there are four monks as companions, they are able to divide the Sangha. After Devadatta heard the Teacher instructing others in this way, he became even more diligent in his efforts to divide the Sangha. There, he satisfied five hundred monks with various provisions, and then traveled around with Devadatta. King Ajatashatru also offered five hundred cartloads of fruit and many provisions. When this matter was reported to the Teacher, the Teacher taught the story of abandoning good fields and offering to bad fields, and also verses about how evil people will be ruined by gain and honor. There, in a wide place halfway along the road, Devadatta himself sat in the middle of the row, gathering and eating with five hundred monks. After that, the Teacher went from Shravasti to Rajagriha. Since the noble Sangha could not be divided, he went together with the Sangha, which was mostly composed of virtuous ordinary people, and stayed in Rajagriha for the summer retreat. At that time, the one who served was the noble Rahula. During that time, Devadatta and the four monks who followed him were instructed by the Teacher, admonished by the Sangha, and repeatedly admonished, but they still did not give up their efforts to divide the Sangha. During that summer retreat, there was a famine. The monks who had attained miraculous powers acted as before, but the Blessed One wished to remain in meditation for three months, and no one went before him except at the time of begging for alms and reciting the precepts. There, Devadatta offered all kinds of provisions to those five hundred ordinary monks. After three months had passed, Devadatta led the five hundred people a little way down the road and said this: The ascetic Gautama says to his disciples that those who live in solitude, beg for alms, wear rags from the dustbin, wear only three robes, and have no extra covering will attain liberation. Whoever does not want those five ascetic practices should stay away from the ascetic Gautama.
