Near the cliff, seated on a stone slab like a white cloth, he taught the Dharma to the gods, including his mother. The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana and many other monks were residing in Śrāvastī for the summer retreat. There, the monks asked Mahāmaudgalyāyana, "Where is the Tathāgata residing for the summer retreat?" He replied, "In the realm of the Thirty-three Gods." After three months had passed, the assemblies of the fourfold community came to the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana and said, "We have not seen the Blessed One for a long time and are very eager. Venerable one, please go, for we do not have the miraculous power to go there. It is not difficult for the gods to come to this Jambudvīpa, so please request the Blessed One to descend to Jambudvīpa." Then, the venerable one went by means of miraculous power, prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One, and sat to one side, saying, "These hosts of gods are born here because they possess the discipline that pleases the venerable one." The Teacher also praised, saying, "It is so." Then, after the gods had departed from the Teacher's presence, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana conveyed the message to the fourfold community: "Go, and in seven days he will descend to the foot of the Udumbara tree in the Apajara forest of the city of Saṃkāśya." In an instant, he came to Jambudvīpa and told the fourfold community. They cleaned that place and arranged various offerings. During that interval of seven days, the Blessed One went from the Anavatapta to the Akaniṣṭha heavens, and to other places where it is not customary to go, and there were countless beings to be tamed. He taught the Dharma to all such beings. Thus, he placed countless immeasurable beings of the divine realm in maturation and liberation. Then, when he returned to the land of the Thirty-three, Indra, the lord of the gods, asked the Blessed One, "Does the Blessed One intend to descend to Jambudvīpa?" The Blessed One replied, "It is so." Then, he commanded all the artisans, and from the Thirty-three to Jambudvīpa, they made a staircase of lapis lazuli in the middle, a staircase of gold on the right, and a staircase of crystal on the left. At that time, the sight of Brahmā

Descending from the golden staircase, he walks on the right side of the body together with the gods of the form realm. Indra, holding an umbrella with a thousand spokes, descends from the crystal staircase, surrounded by many gods of the desire realm, and walks on the left side of the body. The Blessed One descends from the central beryl staircase. If he were to descend only with his feet, the heretics would say, "The ascetic Gautama has lost his miraculous powers because he has seen the desires and beauties of the gods." If he were to descend only by means of miraculous powers, then the gods' construction of the staircase would be meaningless, and he would not see the increase of merit. Therefore, sometimes he descends by means of miraculous powers, and sometimes he descends with his feet. The gods cannot tolerate the unpleasant smell of human beings, so the Teacher blessed it with the fragrance of sandalwood. At that time, the Venerable Subhuti, sitting under a tree, saw this and thought, "Alas, these gods will also return to their own abodes today. All these people will also die within a hundred years. The Tathagata will also soon pass into nirvana." He saw the truth because of the aversion, and soon obtained the Arhatship. Then the Blessed One descended to the ground and sat on the prepared seat. All places were surrounded by the fourfold assembly, kings, ministers, Brahmins, householders, and other immeasurable crowds of people, and he opened many doors of the Dharma. At that time, the Holy Lotus-Colored One thought, "If I go in the form of a Bhikshuni, I am afraid I will not be allowed to enter the presence of the Teacher." So she transformed herself into a Chakravartin king and his retinue and went. The retinue was amazed and made way with various speculations. The Venerable Charka recognized that it was the Holy Lotus-Colored One from the scent. Seeing the form of the Chakravartin, some of the retinue were attached to the power of the gods, and some were attached to the power of humans. In order to reverse this situation, the Buddha preached the Dharma, causing them to obtain the four fruits, and to generate immeasurable Bodhicitta. The Buddha taught: "Rather than obtaining the entire earth, or going to the heavens, or obtaining Samadhi, the fruit of Stream-enterer is the most excellent." And so on.

Finished. Those are the deeds of descent from the gods, that is, small miracles, or second miracles, or also known as later miracles. Eighty-eighth, going to the City of Good Deeds: At that time, there were six blessed people in the southern City of Good Deeds, namely the householder named "Sheep," whose empty storehouse would be filled as soon as he looked at it; his wife, when preparing food for one person, would produce food enough for hundreds of thousands of people; his son, when tying an empty container for five hundred panas around his waist, would be filled with hundreds of thousands of panas; his daughter-in-law, when mixing one portion of good fragrance, would increase to hundreds of thousands of portions; the male servant, when plowing one field, would plow seven fields; and the female servant, when scooping out one container of grain, would scoop out seven containers of grain. At that time, the Blessed One, knowing that the time had come to subdue the people of Good Deeds, said, "Ananda, I will go to the City of Good Deeds, and I will exhort those who go there to wear the Dharma robes." Having said this, the Blessed One, together with his retinue, gradually went in that direction. After showing the great miracle, the heretics fled to live in remote areas. The heretics living in the City of Good Deeds, hearing that the Buddha was about to come, became very agitated, thinking, "If he comes here, we will gain nothing, we must find a way." So they went to the local householders and others, saying, "May you obtain the Dharma! What does 'seeing and leaving' mean?" (The locals) asked them, (the heretics) said, "Having seen your wealth, and not seeing your decline, we will leave. The ascetic Gautama will come raining down hailstones of knives, and many of you will lose your sons and families." Those people said, "In that case, should we avoid or stay?" The heretics said, "Then drive all the people nearby into the city, cut down all the green grass, destroy all the lodgings such as guest houses, cut down all the flowers and fruits, and poison all the water in the ponds and so on!" Just as they said, those people did as well. Then, when the Blessed One and his retinue approached, the wind god
