Having accepted, he rose again, prostrated at the feet of the Teacher, and entered the assembly of attendants to listen to the Dharma. Thus, the Teacher's act of laying out a seat, although it seemed to be done to dispel the contempt at that time, was also implicitly appointing him as the successor to the throne. The ninth demonstration of dwelling together with me is: When the venerable Ānanda was listening to the Dharma, he concentrated his mind with faith, and did not even notice that the pores of his head were being drilled open by living beings. In five hundred lifetimes, he studied sixty thousand treatises on signs, and was extremely skilled in inferring signs and characteristics, and was the best among those who were clear and adept at distinguishing. Furthermore, the Blessed One was dwelling in the Brahmin city with Sala trees. At that time, in the midst of a gathering of many great Śrāvakas, the Teacher said: When will I become old and frail, and become weary from imparting instructions to the fourfold assembly? Who will please me and become an attendant who does not neglect his own affairs? At that time, Ajñātakauṇḍinya rose and said: I will do so. The Teacher said: Kauṇḍinya, you yourself also need an attendant, sit on the seat. In this way, from the horse-tamer onwards, up to Gangpo, he spoke five hundred times. Then, Maudgalyāyana's son observed to whom the Teacher's mind was inclined, and seeing that it was inclined towards Ānanda, he also told Śāriputra: Let us go and persuade him. Then the two of them went, and Śāriputra said to Ānanda: Would you like to be the Teacher's attendant? It will become a great matter. Ānanda said: The Blessed One is difficult to approach and endure, therefore I do not wish to. Maudgalyāyana's son said: The Teacher's mind is inclined towards you. Ānanda said: If it is allowed that I do not possess the Tathāgata's robes, do not possess the food to which I am invited, and that I am not disturbed at any time in order to see and attend to the Teacher, then I would like to be an attendant. Afterwards, Maudgalyāyana's son reported this matter to the Teacher, and the Teacher said: Very good, it will not be said that I gain fame through offerings because of clothing and food, Ānanda is a virtuous person. Furthermore, the Teacher abides in correct samādhi, arises, and in whatever state of samādhi he abides, the venerable one

Kungawo knew that this was a rare and wonderful Dharma! Sixty, two incidents of monkeys offering honey: After that, the Blessed One resided in the forest of Kunjika, the hermit in the land of Speech Freedom. At that time, many alms bowls were placed uncovered. A monkey came down from a tree and went there. The monks, fearing that the monkey would break the alms bowls, tried to stop it. The Teacher said, "Monks, this monkey is mindful, do not stop it." Then, that monkey took the Blessed One's alms bowl, climbed up a sala tree, took the essence of honey without harming the bees, filled the alms bowl, came down from the tree, and offered it to the Teacher, but He did not accept it. The monkey went to one side, removed the small limbs of dead creatures that were in it, and offered it again. The Teacher still did not accept it. The monkey took the alms bowl again, went to one side, rinsed it with clean water, and offered it. Then the Teacher accepted it with His hand and ate it. At that time, that monkey was delighted and danced around, full of faith in the Teacher. It fell into a well and died, and was reborn in that city in the womb of the wife of a Brahmin who was diligent in six professions. Later, when he was born, a rain of honey fell in the house. The child was named Honey-endowed, son of Residence. Later, after a long time, he renounced and every day without effort he obtained three alms bowls of honey. The first he offered to the Buddha, the second to the Sangha, and the third he enjoyed with his friends. In the end, he realized the fruit of an Arhat. Another story is the same as the others, except that the Blessed One was residing in the tiered house by the Monkey Pond in Vaishali. The monkey, looking intently at the Blessed One, did not look back and fell into the well as before. After dying, he was reborn as a god, came before the Blessed One, and made offerings with flowers and so on. The Teacher also taught him the Dharma, and he saw the truth and made a special statement. Now it is the taming of the younger brother Nanda, the ordination of five hundred Shakya women, and passing away like a disciple.
