Then he asked: Have you committed misdeeds with your three doors of body, speech, and mind? Have you experienced the ripening of karma? I have. Who is your evil friend? My mother. After that, where were you born before? In hell. What kind of life is it now? It is an animal. Where will you be born now? In hell. After saying this, the fish cried. Then, the Blessed One said: O King with compassion, to me, With good thoughts and faith, Free from attachment to this animal life, Then you will go to heaven. That fish also developed faith in the Buddha, and the Teacher also taught the Dharma to it. Ananda asked about the cause of this. The World Honored One taught: In the past, during the teachings of Kashyapa Buddha, there was a Brahmin named Shebu Serkya who was skilled in speech. Urged by his mother, he said to the monks: You people with elephant heads, what do you know? And so on, he fabricated slanders. The World Honored One taught about the consequences of this. After hearing the Dharma, countless beings became disgusted, and the Teacher extensively taught them the Dharma, thereby establishing tens of thousands of beings in the four fruits and the three types of bodhicitta. That crocodile fish also died from fasting, and in faith in the Teacher, was reborn as a deity of the Four Great Kings lineage. He came to the Teacher, made offerings, and after hearing the Buddha's teachings, attained the stream-enterer fruit. If those five hundred fishermen had not fallen into evil destinies, then they would have developed a strong desire to be ordained. Shariputra knew this, so he made them vomit and brought them before the Teacher to report. The World Honored One also ordained those five hundred fishermen with "Welcome, Bhikshus" (ཚུར་ཤོག,देवते एहि,devate ehi,Come here, Deva). Later, after a long time, these five hundred all attained Arhatship. These five hundred who were ordained from fishermen also established precepts regarding the defeat of falsely claiming to have superhuman qualities, etc., before attaining Arhatship. The fifty-seventh, Mahakashyapa gathers his retinue: Also in the Kashyapa lineage, there was a Brahmin named Nyagrodha, who was born as one who had abandoned desires. When his father began to seek a wife for him, he said: If I can find the most beautiful female image made of gold from the Zambu River, I will marry her. So, he also made four identical (golden statues) and sent people to search in four directions. Those who went to the west arrived at the city of Kalidga.

From a place called Kapila, there was a Brahmin girl named Serkya Zangmo (Good Palasa), daughter of the Brahmin Serkya (Palasa). Her complexion was even better than the gold of the Jambū River. Brahmin messengers proposed to her, and after consulting with her relatives, she was given in marriage to the Brahmin Nyagrodhaskya. Thereafter, the two lived at home with the understanding of being siblings, practicing celibacy. When one was sleeping or sitting, the other would live by walking. Then, both of them wanted to renounce, but their parents did not allow it, so they lived at home for twelve years, practicing celibacy. After their parents passed away, Odzung Nyagrodhaskya looked after external affairs such as fields, while Serkya Zangmo looked after household affairs, seeing that everything was full of suffering. So, she gave away all the household wealth in charity and distributed it to relatives and friends. She made sure that male and female servants and animals were not impoverished or exploited. She said, "A small measure of rice is enough to satisfy hunger, one bed is enough to create comfort, one pair of coarse clothes is enough to wear, the rest is just holding onto ignorance." Having said this, Odzung Nyagrodhaskya and Serkya Zangmo both left home at the same time, each carrying a large piece of cloth, giving it away to each other as they pleased. Then, they separated at a fork in the road. Serkya Zangmo then renounced in the presence of the naked practitioners called "Mūstegs Byed Dzogs Byed" (Ajivikas). However, after a long time, she later renounced in the Buddha's teachings and also attained the fruit of Arhatship. Odzung Nyagrodhaskya, on the other hand, asked the six teachers (of other schools) individually about the path of celibacy, but they taught perversely, so he was not satisfied. Finally, he saw the Bhagavan residing at the Bamboo Grove Monastery in Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir, Bihar), with Odzung Nyagrodhaskya near a single tree. Seeing this, he thought, "Ah! I have seen the teacher!" So, he went to the Buddha with great joy, prostrated at his feet, and said: "Venerable One, Bhagavan, you are my teacher, and I am your disciple." He repeated this three times. The

Upali also granted his approval and permission. Through that very promise, he was ordained and fully ordained. He granted permission, saying, "Kashyapa, therefore, you should train in this way: observe the five aggregates of clinging with arising and decay." After saying this, the Tathagata departed. Kashyapa, by meditating on that instruction, attained the stream-entry fruit on that very day. Within eight days, he surpassed the path of learning, and on the ninth day, he attained the fruit of an Arhat, gaining extraordinary qualities. He was even more extraordinary than others, and thus he was known as Maha Kashyapa. Then, on one occasion, Kashyapa wore a fine cotton robe worth a hundred thousand, while the Teacher wore a robe made from the cloth of a whisk broom. As they walked together, Kashyapa thought, "Wherever the Teacher sits, I will spread my robe." When the Teacher prepared to sit, Kashyapa folded and spread the robe, and the Teacher sat on it slightly, saying, "Your robe is also very soft." Kashyapa said to the Teacher, "Out of compassion for me, please accept my robe." Then the Teacher accepted Kashyapa's robe and gave the robe from the Teacher's whisk broom to Maha Kashyapa. Eighth, granting half a seat to Kashyapa: After that, Maha Kashyapa lived in a secluded monastery. Because he always abided in the twelve qualities of asceticism, he was also prophesied to be the best of those who abide in ascetic qualities. At a later time, the Bhagavan was dwelling in the midst of a gathering of mostly newly ordained monks. When Maha Kashyapa came before the Teacher, the newly ordained monks did not recognize him. Because he was wearing old clothes, carrying a whisk broom, and living in a monastery, they saw that his hair and beard were long and made sounds of mockery. In order to dispel the contempt for the supreme of the Shravakas, the Bhagavan himself said, "Kashyapa, you are content with little and know satisfaction. Sit on half of my seat." Thus, the Teacher placed him on the edge of half of his own seat. Then Maha Kashyapa understood the Bhagavan's intention and realized that the Buddha's granting of half a seat was just a slight gesture.
