He was staying in the Nigrodha monastery. At that time, the Blessed One had a younger brother named Nanda, who, except for the crown of his head and the white hair between his eyebrows, possessed the thirty-two marks, was four fingers shorter in stature than the Buddha, and had been prophesied to become a powerful Chakravartin. He had a wife named Pundarika, who was extremely beautiful and skilled in the arts of women, and Nanda was particularly infatuated with her, spending his days in this way. Knowing that the time to tame him had come, one morning the Blessed One went to his house for alms and stood outside the door. At that moment, he emitted a golden light that illuminated the house, and Nanda's wife, knowing that the Buddha had come, was about to go out when, fearing that Nanda would renounce, she grabbed the edge of his garment to stop him, but Nanda insisted on leaving, and the garment was marked with water. She said, "Do not leave until this is dry! Otherwise, I will fine you five hundred panas!" After that, Nanda came out and prostrated himself at the feet of the Blessed One. He took the bowl, went inside, filled it with excellent food, and went to offer it to the Tathagata, but the Tathagata did not accept it and followed him as before. The Blessed One signaled to the venerable Ananda not to accept it either, and then left, with Nanda following him, and offered alms in the Nigrodha monastery. The Blessed One himself ate the remainder, and gave it to his younger brother Nanda. As he was eating and sitting, he said, "Why do you not renounce? Renounce!" The Tathagata, from the time of his first arising of the mind, has never violated anyone who is in accordance with the Dharma, whether it be a Khenpo, an Acharya, a father, a mother, or someone worthy of respect, because the Blessed One's command is very strict, so Nanda could not disobey, and said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, I will renounce." Then the Buddha said, "Shave his head!" So he called the barber from outside and began to shave him. The barber thought, "I will soon become a powerful Chakravartin, and if you shave my head, I will cut off your hands!" The barber was afraid and hid the razor. Then the Buddha himself took the water pot in his hand and poured it on Nanda's head.

The barber shaved his hair and beard. He thought: Now it is the Buddha's command, without the freedom to be fully ordained, I will go home when it gets dark. When he thought this and left, the Buddha conjured up a huge cliff, making him turn back, thinking he would leave when it dawned. As soon as it dawned, the Buddha ordered Gawa to be the house manager. After that, when the monks went out for alms, Gawa thought he would sweep and then go home, but the sweeping was never finished, so he abandoned the broom and thought he would close the door and leave, but when he closed one door, another opened, and he could never finish closing them. So he abandoned the unfinished doors, thinking: If I become a king, I will build a temple better than this. Thinking this, he went on a main road, but fearing he would meet the Buddha, he took a side road. As it happened, on that very road, he saw the Buddha coming towards him, so he hid behind the downward-hanging branch of a tree. When the Blessed One went in that direction, the branch itself lifted upwards. The Buddha said: Gawa, where are you going? Come back! He felt ashamed and dejected, and followed behind the Blessed One. After that, the Blessed One went to Shravasti and stayed in the Jeta Grove Anathapindika's Park. Later, at another time, the Blessed One aroused in his younger brother Gawa an interest in seeing Mount Gandhamadana, and had Gawa hold onto the edge of his Dharma robe, and the Tathagata ascended into the sky and came to the mango tree at Mount Gandhamadana. There lived a blind forest hag. The Buddha commanded: Which is more beautiful, your white lotus or this? I said I have no attachment to either, so I cannot see the difference. The hag replied: This monk is incomparable, the white lotus can rival a celestial maiden. The Buddha said: Gawa, this hag also has desire, hatred, and liking. After that, he ascended into the sky as before, and finally arrived at the abode of the Thirty-Three Gods. Staying in the pleasure garden of Delightful Grove, the Buddha said: Gawa, go and look at the people of the Thirty-Three Heavens. So he went to look everywhere, and everywhere there were gods and goddesses.
