Go to Udyana, and I will venerate the monastic community of monks for as long as I live. The Buddha instructed: Is there a monastery there? He replied: No. The Buddha instructed: Wherever there is a monastery, monks will come, go, and dwell. He replied: I will build a monastery by any means. The Blessed One remained silent, indicating his approval. Thirty-ninth, the construction of Jetavana: Thereafter, when Anathapindika had completed all the necessary tasks in Rajagriha, he came to pay homage at the feet of the Teacher and requested, "Please grant me a monk as an assistant." Then, the venerable Shariputra, knowing that he could be tamed, gave his consent. The venerable Shariputra also, having finished his alms round the next morning and settled his dwelling, set out walking towards Shravasti. The householder also, on his way back, inspected all the parks, gardens, and forests around Shravasti, He saw that the grove of Prince Jeta was suitable for the site of a monastery, possessing immeasurable qualities. Prince Jeta was a brother of King Prasenajit. Then Anathapindika went to the young Prince Jeta and said, "Please grant me the grove; I will build a monastery for the Buddha there." Jeta refused. After being asked three times, Jeta said on the third time, "Even if you cover the grove with golden sand, I will not give it to you." Anathapindika said, "Young man, the value of the grove has already been determined; fill it with gold." Then the two of them argued over whether the value had been determined or not. Then they went to the judges. The Four Great Kings, guardians of the world, transformed themselves into four judges, and they said, "Young man, fill it with gold of the determined value; this grove belongs to the householder." Jeta had no recourse. Then Anathapindika transported gold with many carts and so on, and spread it over the entire ground of the grove. Most of it was covered, but he saw that some areas were not covered.

After that, thinking about where there might be a treasure worthy of this, he looked in all directions. The Victorious One (king's name) said, 'Householder, if you regret it, you can take the gold back. Jeta Grove (kunga rawa) belongs to me.' After the householder explained the matter in detail, the Victorious One thought, 'Alas, the appearance of the Buddha is truly supreme. For the sake of Jeta Grove, he is giving up so much wealth. I should also do a little.' Thinking, 'Then, please give me this piece of land where gold has not been spread! I will also build a gatehouse.' After discussing this, the householder and the young man both agreed. After that, they started building the monastery. The heretics gathered together and came to Anathapindika, saying, 'Alas, we have already divided the cities. The city of the ascetic Gautama is Rajagriha, and ours is Shravasti. For the sake of Gautama, do not build a monastery!' The householder said to them, 'Even if you have divided the cities, you have not divided my wealth, so I will build the Dharma heap that I like most.' After that, they went to the king and argued as before. Although they were defeated by the householder's arguments, they still chattered on and on, not allowing the monastery to be built as they pleased. They said, 'Compete in ability with the foremost of Gautama's Shravaka disciples! If he wins, then we will let you build.' After the householder reported this to Shariputra, Shariputra knew that those heretics also had roots of virtue in their minds, and also knew that subduing them depended on himself, so he said to the householder, 'Do it that way! But it will be seven days from now.' He told the heretics about this. After they discussed it, they thought that instead of showing their ability now, they should postpone the time, either this person will run away, or they will look for helpers. If he runs away, then it will be over, so for the time being, we will also look for helpers.' So they all dispersed, counting the days, and hurriedly looking for helpers. As a result, they found a person named Kuntugya Migmar, who was very skilled in illusion, and asked him for help. During that time, many people who should be subdued gathered every day. When the seven days were up, seats were laid out in a very wide area.

Sa. The venerable Shariputra sat on the lion throne, first with a smile, and then looked at those who should be subdued. Then, when countless heretics and spectators gathered, the constant wanderer Red Eyes conjured trees blooming with saha kara flowers. The venerable Shariputra released red winds and heavy rain, uprooting the trees and destroying them completely. He also conjured a lotus pond, conjured many elephants, stirred and trampled it, leaving nothing behind. He released a seven-headed snake, conjured many Garudas, and devoured them completely. Finally, when he cursed a corpse, the venerable Shariputra struck the corpse with a peg. This is the nature of Dharma, if a corpse is released and the opponent strikes it with a peg, then the one who released it will be killed, so the corpse returned and drove away the heretics such as Red Eyes. They were terrified and had no other refuge, so they sought refuge in the venerable Shariputra, and when the venerable pulled out the peg, the corpse subsided. After that, the constant wanderer Red Eyes, out of faith, renounced, received full ordination, heard the Dharma, and finally became an Arhat. The venerable Shariputra taught the Dharma to all the assembled retinue according to their minds, and countless gods and humans saw the truth and, according to their abilities, inclined towards the three types of Bodhi. There were also many heretics who had not seen the truth, wanting to look for opportunities and gaps. They came to the benefactor Anathapindika and wailed, 'Let us work, let us build a monastery!' The benefactor knowingly agreed and let them do so. Once, while they were working, the venerable Shariputra was walking and staying near a tree. At that time, there was no one else present, and those heretics thought, 'We will strangle the venerable Shariputra, hang him on a tree and kill him.' So they took a rope and came to the tree, circling around. The venerable conjured many strong men who were working, with sturdy backs, great strength, and holding iron rods, driving and beating those heretics against each other, and showing threatening miracles, therefore (they) sought refuge in the venerable.
