In between. Then, that naga was made to take refuge and established in the precepts, and he breathed out that in the future he would be prophesied by the Buddha Maitreya, and that naga disappeared. Then, even those who had not taken the vows were fully ordained by saying, "Come, well come." That was the great Arya Katyayana. The Blessed One taught him the Dharma in a way that did not rely on the two extremes of existence and non-existence, and Katyayana attained the state of an Arhat. After that, not long after, the Teacher and his retinue were staying in the land of Magadha. The thirty-fifth, sending to subdue King Paksgyal: At that time, in the city of Paksgyal in the western land of Malawa, King Rab Snang, a cruel king, ruled the kingdom according to Dharma. A great plague broke out in that land, and the mantra practitioners were striving to find a way to pacify the plague, but for a while it did not subside. At that time, knowing that the time for taming had come, he sent Arya Katyayana and his five hundred retinue to tame King Rab Snang and the people of Paksgyal. As they were traveling, they passed through the city of Kanyakubja. A Brahmin who had previously been a friend of Arya Katyayana had a beautiful daughter named Skra Can (Hair Woman). At that time, a dance teacher who had come from the south saw her hair and said to the Brahmin father, "Sell me this hair, I will pay a thousand gold coins." The Brahmin scolded him harshly and did not sell it. The next day, the Brahmin himself died. Not long after, the Brahmin's wife heard that Katyayana and his retinue were coming, and thought, "He is a young friend of that Brahmin, and there is nothing to offer him as a guest." She was very upset. When her daughter asked her why, she told her the story. The daughter said, "Then sell my hair." Then she asked the dance teacher again, and the dance teacher said, "I don't need it now, but if you sell it for five hundred gold coins, I will take it." So she sold her hair and received five hundred gold coins, and made a good offering of umbrellas and food to Arya Katyayana and his retinue. After that, the Brahmin woman sat down to listen to the Dharma. The Arya asked Skra Can what had happened, and she said that her conduct was impaired, and told the previous story.

Then, the (holy one) summoned the one with the braided hair to the holy one's feet and had him prostrate himself at his feet. At that time, a Brahmin woman asked (the holy one): 'To whom shall this one with the braided hair be given?' (The holy one) replied: 'Although you have asked a question that is not appropriate for a renunciate, nevertheless, whoever he is given to will receive five hundred hidden treasures, five hundred external treasures, and five hundred of the best of villages.' Having spoken thus, (the holy one) departed. As soon as the holy one and his retinue arrived in the city of Holy Victory, the non-humans who spread disease mostly fled far away, and half of the plague subsided. The city gatekeeper reported to the king: 'Five hundred renunciates whose appearance has never been seen before have come to this city, and half of the plague has subsided.' The king was delighted. The Brahmins said: 'This is the power of our performance of peaceful deeds!' Then, the king summoned Katyayana and the five hundred monks, as well as the Brahmins, to a dirty place with elephant dung, and offered them poor food. When they came out, the king had a man pretend to be indifferent and asked them whether the offerings they received were good or bad. The Brahmins spoke ill of the king, while the monks said: 'The giver gave, the receiver received, the beings were satisfied, and they took a day's rations.' And they reported these words to the king. Again, the next morning, the king summoned both groups to a clean dwelling and offered them fine food. Then, he sent another man to ask them as before. The Brahmins praised the king, while the monks said the same as before. Similarly, in many places such as horse dung, he repeatedly tested them as before. The monks never changed, but the Brahmins, because of their greed, looked at the quality of the food and immediately changed their expressions. The king, knowing this, was convinced that the most excellent objects of offering were the monks, and therefore repeatedly made offerings to them. Once, on an occasion when there were many dancers and singers, the king asked the monks about the quality of the singing and dancing. The monks replied: 'We have not seen or heard it.' The king did not believe them, so he gave a bowl filled to the brim with oil to a man who was to be executed, and threatened him: 'If even one drop falls, you will be executed.' Then he had him walk past the dancers and singers. After that, the songs and
