Thus it passed. Having practiced such austerities, experiencing intense and unbearable pain, but not being discouraged, but initiating diligence. The body was not uncultivated, but cultivated. Not dullness, but mindfulness was established. Not distraction, but compassion was focused on one point. Then, in the second stage, he began to meditate on emptiness samadhi, and when he entered into practice, by suppressing exhalation and inhalation, all the winds went to the crown of his head, and an unbearable stinging pain occurred in his head, like being struck with an iron nail. Not discouraged, etc., as before. In the third stage, when actually attaining emptiness samadhi, when suppressing the wind, it flowed from the two ear holes, like a blacksmith blowing a bellows. Thus, although experiencing unbearable pain, not discouraged, etc., as before. In the fourth stage, when having perfected emptiness samadhi and entering into equipoise, by suppressing the flow of wind, the abdomen became extremely distended, and there was a stinging pain in the head and a feeling like being cut by a sharp water knife inside the body, and a stinging pain like being hung in a pit of fire, although experiencing these, not discouraged, etc., as before. In the fifth stage, he partook of poor food and little alcohol, such as consuming the broth of boiled Mon beans or Chinese beans or rice, etc., and not consuming anything else until the color of that broth had faded. At that time, the gods requested to extract essence from the pores of his hair, but he thought that abandoning food and taking essence was hypocrisy, deception, evil, and deceiving others, so he forbade the extraction of essence. Therefore, his body became extremely emaciated and crazed, but not discouraged, etc., as before. How diminished did his body become? The body was like an Astā shrub and a Kalika sapling, which shrivel when completely dried up. The head was also like a lumpy, old curd. The eyeballs were sunken, like stars in a well. The ribs of the body were uneven, and the vertebrae were like braids of hair, and when he wanted to stand, he would fall forward, and when he wanted to sit, he would fall backward, so the upper and lower parts of his body needed to be supported and placed alternately. The roots of the pores of his hair were all rotten, and on his body

When touched by hand, the body hair would fall to the ground. Then, whatever good color there was before also disappeared. Three gods came there, and one of them said, "Gautama is black." Similarly, he is bluish-green. He is purple." Thus he spoke. Then, three similes arose in his mind: Just as rubbing very wet wood in water will not produce fire, being attached to desire in both body and mind, one cannot be liberated; similarly, even slightly less moist wet wood is the same, if the body distances itself from desire but the mind does not, one will not be liberated; just as fire arises from rubbing dry wood, by distancing both body and mind from desire, one will be able to know, see, and touch. Then, in the sixth period, when he slept a little, he slept on a very rough grass mat, and otherwise it was the same as before. He ate one grain of sesame, etc., and did not eat a second grain until its luster had disappeared, so his body became even more emaciated than before. Thus, he practiced asceticism with meager food, and not being emaciated, etc., was as before. At that time, King Śuddhodana sent two hundred and fifty people each day to inquire, and the gods also sent that many. When those who returned each day conveyed the news, King Śuddhodana was even more saddened, and the queen's attendants also slept on grass mats, and Grahadhāriṇī also abandoned her ornaments and entered into the way of practicing asceticism. Then, because Grahadhāriṇī had a son in her womb, and because there was a possibility of harm to him, the king forbade anyone from speaking to Grahadhāriṇī about practicing asceticism. He also commanded those who conveyed the news not to tell anyone other than himself about the Bodhisattva's practice of asceticism. When the king himself heard it, although he was saddened inwardly, he hid his expression and consoled the queen's attendants with other words. Then, in the seventh period, he thought that this much asceticism was not enough, so he ate a small pill made of the urine and feces of calves that had not drunk milk, called very bad food. Before its luster disappeared

He did not eat supper. After sleeping a little, he went to the charnel ground and used a corpse as a pillow. At that time, his body was even thinner than before, and his body became as if it had no moisture. The young men, young women, and shepherds of the city came and stuffed cotton, flowers, and pills into his ears, poked them with sticks, and pulled them out of his nostrils. They stuffed things from his nostrils into his ears and pulled them out, doing this back and forth. Some said, "Look, the meat-eater in the charnel ground!" They threw clods of earth and tiles at him, but he neither heard nor saw. However, he remained as before, without being discouraged. Twenty-second, the end of asceticism: After practicing asceticism for six years, he thought, "Now, all those who wish to be free from suffering have come to this point, but this cannot bring knowledge, insight, and enlightenment. If I could attain enlightenment by relying on the meditation I practiced in the village of farmers before, but now I am weak and cannot do it. I must restore my strength." He thought, and then breathed comfortably, ate coarse food such as rice, anointed his body with sesame oil, and bathed in warm water. At that time, the five attendants lost faith and said, "Wise ones, this Gautama has declined from asceticism, and now he will not gain anything." So they abandoned the Bodhisattva and went to Varanasi, where they were known as the Five Bhikkhus. After that, the Bodhisattva gradually regained his strength and went to the village of Sdecan. There, the local ruler named Sdecan had two daughters named Gama and Gastoma. These two daughters were as perfect as jewels. They had heard that the Bodhisattva would become a wheel-turning king, but they had not heard of him becoming a renunciate. They had heard that if any woman observed certain precepts and ascetic practices for twelve years, and upon completion made the best milk porridge and offered it to the ascetic who was exhausted by asceticism, she could become his wife. So they vowed to observe the ascetic practices.
