Having done this, the king awoke from his faint and felt somewhat comfortable. He heard that the others had gone to collect the relics of the Buddha, and said, "I will go too," and deployed his troops. As he was about to ride an elephant to depart, he remembered the Blessed One and fainted again, falling to the ground. When he awoke again, he prepared to ride a horse to depart, but the same thing happened. Unable to go, the king sent the Brahmin Devakara with an army, saying the same words as before. They saw many armies gathered along the way, and the wives, youths, and daughters of the Mallas of Kushinagar were also learning archery and other skills. At that time, there was a Brahmin named Drona, who was virtuous, had dignified speech, was always of a virtuous nature, upright, and wise. Realizing that if they fought each other, many people would be killed, he went to each of the eight tribes, including the Mallas of Kushinagar, and said, "Wise ones, listen. The Blessed One has long been endowed with patience and praised patience. It is not right to kill each other for his relics. I will divide the relics into eight parts. Please give me the vessel in which the relics are kept, and I will build a stupa in the city and make offerings." He spoke to them separately in this way. Everyone's animosity subsided, they became of one mind, and they agreed. Then, the Brahmin divided the relics equally into eight parts and gave them to each. The relic casket or vase was taken by the Brahmin Drona. The ashes of the relics were taken by the Brahmin of Nyagrodha. They each invited the relics with great respect and veneration, and built stupas in their respective lands. The first tooth is in the heaven of the Thirty-three (Trayastrimsa), the second is in the land of Gandhara, the third is in Kalinga. The fourth tooth and one relic, obtained by the people of Kusinagara, were stolen by the Nagas and are now in the land of the Nagas. The other seven parts are in their respective lands. Thus: Of the eight relics of the Buddha with the eye of wisdom, seven were obtained for worship by the people of Jambudvipa. One relic of that supreme being is worshiped by the Naga king of Kusinagara. That supreme being's

Of the four teeth, one tooth is offered to the three realms of the world; the second is in the delightful place of the city of Holding Sentences; the third is in the land of the Kalinga king; the fourth tooth of that supreme being is offered by the dragon king of the city of Sounding. King Ashoka, in his youth, extensively built seven stupas. Through that power, on this earth as well, it is manifestly adorned with objects of aspiration. Thus, to that relic of the Buddha's body with eyes, the king of gods, the king of nagas, the king of men, and the lords of men, nagas, and yakshas, all paid great reverence and offered respectful worship. The all-knowing, compassionate, and powerful one, born into the Shakya clan, attained enlightenment in Magadha, turned the wheel of Dharma in Kashi, and passed away relying on the Grass City. Thus it is said. First, regarding the first council. At that time, the gods proclaimed thus: Together with the venerable Shariputra, eighty thousand arhats passed away; together with the venerable Maudgalyayana, seventy thousand arhats passed away. At the time when the Blessed One passed into complete nirvana, one hundred and eighty thousand arhats, renowned as powerful, also passed away, and the holy Dharma became like smoke. The monks did not even utter the sound of the three baskets. Then, the venerable Mahakashyapa rebuked the gods thus: Monks, gather together! At that time, the noble Gangpo was the steward, having entered into the ultimate state of the fourth dhyana, he observed and arose, struck the ghanta, and gathered five hundred arhats, lacking one. Then, knowing that the venerable Gavampati had not come, Gangpo, through miraculous power, went to the immeasurable palace of the Shiri tree and said to Gavampati thus: Kashyapa and the sangha of monks say thus: Venerable Gavampati, may you be free from illness, there is a little work for the sangha, please come quickly. Then Gavampati said: Gangpo, has the Teacher not gone to another world for the sake of taming those to be tamed? Is there no strife and mutual fault-finding among the sangha? And so on, after that, even so, if it is said to be the sangha of monks such as the Buddha, Kashyapa
