There, the gods showered down a rain of Mandarava flowers, and the scattered flowers reached a height where the knees would be submerged, from the twin Sala trees to the stupa. There, the giants, wishing to make offerings to the Tathagata's relics, covered the relics with petals of cottonwood, wrapped them with five hundred of the finest linen cloths, placed them in an iron coffin, filled it with fragrant sesame oil, placed it on top of a pile of fragrant wood, and began to light the fire, but were unable to ignite it. Because it could not be ignited, they investigated with clairvoyance, and the gods also said, 'Until the Teacher's relics, which have not deteriorated, are seen by the great Kashyapa, no one will be able to light the fire.' Having learned of this, they informed the giants and waited a little while. At that time, the great Kashyapa, along with his retinue of five hundred monks, came to see the relics of the Blessed One, and when they arrived in the sinful land, they met a livelihood-provider who had taken a divine flower and came there. When asked, the man said, 'The Shramana Gautama has passed into Nirvana for seven days, and this is also a flower offered to his relics.' Upon hearing these words, an old man said, 'Monks, I should do this, I should not do this.' He is freed from what can be done, do what can be done, and do not do what cannot be done.' When he said these words, the gods obscured the sound so that no one but Kashyapa could hear it. Kashyapa subdued and vanquished the old man with the power of Dharma, and led the five hundred monks into the Dharma with words of impermanence. At the time when the giants were unable to light the fire, the great Kashyapa and his retinue also came to the place of the stupa where the giants' headdresses were attached. There, they opened the coffin of the relics, and with great care, they gazed upon the undeteriorated relics and prostrated themselves. At that time, there were four great Shravaka disciples near the relics: Kaundinya, Gavyapati, Kashyapa of the Ten Powers, and the great Kashyapa. At that time, because the great Kashyapa had the power of merit, five hundred of the finest linen cloths also appeared immediately, and together with the previous ones, they were wrapped with a thousand linen cloths and a thousand Dharma robes, and then placed in the coffin of the relics as before.

Sat down comfortably. When the people retreated slightly and sat down, the fire ignited naturally. Soon after, it was known that the remains had been cremated. The giants poured milk and perfume from jeweled vases, extinguished the embers of the fire, and opened the urn. Except for the four teeth, everything turned into a pile of mustard seed-like relics, it is said. Everything else wrapped in a thousand silk cloths and a thousand robes was burned to ashes, leaving nothing behind. The robes wrapped around the body inside, and the robes covering everything outside, were not burned at all, nor were they stained with butter, and there was no stain at all. When the fire was extinguished with milk, four trees with many flowers instantly grew from the crevices of the ashes: the golden tree, the horse-ton tree, the yellow tree, and the udumbara tree. There, Ananda also specifically recited verses. The relics were placed in a golden vase, placed on a jeweled palanquin, and carried to a high platform in a very spacious place in the center of the city of Kushinagar, where they were offered with many offerings. The one hundred and twentieth divided the remains into eight parts: At that time, the giants of the land of sin said, "It has been seven days since the Teacher passed away, and the remains have already been cremated." So they came fully armed near the city of Kushinagar and said to the giants of Kushinagar, "The Blessed One has long been an object of suffering and compassion for us. He passed away near your city. Now please give us a share of the relics. We will build a stupa in our country and hold a festival." The people of Kushinagar did not agree. If you don't give it to us, we will take it by force, so the dispute became fierce. In addition, the Uluka royal family living in the country of shaking thoughts, the Lantaka royal family living in the country of making sounds, the Brahmins of the realm of Vishnu, the Shakyas of Kapilavastu, and the Licchavis of Vaishali also came with armies, as before. King Ajatasatru, according to the previous instructions of Mahakashyapa,
