Extensive, and where alms are offered and nirvana is attained, both have the same result: life, color, strength, enjoyment, good rebirth, wealth, and retinue, because they have done and accumulated such deeds. Please say so! Having said this, Ananda also dispelled his regret. Then, the Blessed One, in the middle of the grassy path in the pleasure field of the giants' land, felt discomfort in his back. To rest, he lay down as before and said to Ananda: Recite the limbs of enlightenment. He also recited them. When diligence was mentioned or spoken of, he replied: I have spoken. Then he spoke of the greatness of diligence and sat in the lotus position. At that time, another monk also spoke of the greatness of listening to the Dharma. The one hundred and fifteenth act is going to the grassy place: Then, the Blessed One went to the grassy city, near the giants' village of the grassy place, to the grove of twin Sala trees, and between the twin Sala trees, set the head of the bed facing north. Tonight, at midnight, I will pass into nirvana. He said this. Ananda also did so. The Thus-Gone One arrived there, laid down his right side, placed his feet on top of each other, and practiced the perception of light, as well as mindfulness and awareness, and the perception of nirvana. There, Ananda became very unhappy and truly praised him. Ananda reported: Blessed One, having abandoned six great cities, why do you pass into nirvana in such a bad mud-brick town? He replied: Do not call this a bad city. After telling the stories of King Kusha and King Sudarshana, in this place within a twelve-yojana radius between the grove of twin Sala trees and the stupa where the giants' headdress is tied, I have taken and abandoned six bodies of a universal monarch. The seventh is this present one, and the eighth has no place to abandon. At that time, the monk who held the scriptures was sitting in front of the Blessed One. Hey, monk, do not sit in front of me, leave! Having commanded this, he left. That was because the gods could not come there due to the glory of that monk.

The reason for this was to dispel the words of the gods, who said, "If he passes away tonight, we cannot go to offer because he is before us." There, in the area of twelve yojanas, there was no place not covered by gods, not even enough space to stick a cane. Then, Ananda asked how to make offerings to the relics of the Teacher. He explained in detail how to treat them like the relics of a Chakravartin king, as an answer. He also said to Ananda: "The giants of the grasslands, although the Teacher has passed away near us, because no one invited us, we could not serve him, and later we will regret and quarrel. Go and invite them, saying that the Tathagata will pass away at midnight tonight, so do whatever you need to do." Ananda did as he was told. The giants of the grasslands, with their sons, wives, and other relatives, came before the Tathagata to see his face and to serve him. The Tathagata satisfied them with the Dharma that suited their individual minds. Those giants wanted to take refuge and take the five precepts, and the Tathagata told Ananda to have them receive the lay vows. Knowing that it would not be possible to give the vows one by one, he asked the Buddha for permission, and the Buddha granted it, so he gave the lay vows to five hundred giants at once. The one hundred and sixteenth, taming Rati: Then, the Blessed One thought: "Now there are only two left to be tamed, namely Rati and Subhadra. The wandering Subhadra must be tamed in order to tame his mind, while the king of the Gandharvas, Rati, is difficult to tame. The disciples of the Shravakas can be tamed by the Buddha, but those who are to be tamed by the Buddha cannot be tamed by the Shravakas. After my Nirvana, Rati will not be able to be tamed by anyone else." The king of the Gandharvas, Rati, is a friend of Indra, and from the time the Bodhisattva entered his mother's womb until his final bed, Indra often urged him to go to the Teacher to make offerings.
