After experiences such as a buzzing sound in the ears, a feeling of numbness in the body, a heavy pressure, or itching between the eyebrows, and panting breaths, vague appearances of beings like people and dogs, houses, and roads occur. It is clearer than the subconscious, and a slightly hazy appearance less clear than an actual dream arises, which is called the conceptual thought between sleep and appearance. At this time, one should strongly train the intention to recognize it as a dream. In these three states, the focus is the same except for changing the intention. The way of holding the three physical postures at the three crucial times is also the same as before. However, one should not contract the object of focus into emptiness and abide there, but rather focus the mind on the syllable ཨོཾ་ (Tibetan: ཨོཾ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: ओम्, Sanskrit Romanization: oṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Om), and go to sleep with an intention that is not too strong, thinking, "Now I must recognize this conceptual thought between sleep and appearance." There, if the conceptual thought between sleep and appearance arises, slightly relax the intention of thinking, "This is a dream," and slightly contract the lower jaw. However, if there are too many restraints and dissolutions, one will wake up from sleep, so one should go to sleep with a slightly relaxed intention. Recognize the conceptual thought between sleep and appearance, and since it is held with an intention that involves conceptual thought, do not be carried away by conceptual thought. Thus it is said. This is the instruction on how it is impossible not to grasp dreams. Here, in the instruction manuals of Jag, Sam, and Serlingpa, they only briefly mentioned the explanation of the syllable ཨོཾ་ (Tibetan: ཨོཾ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: ओम्, Sanskrit Romanization: oṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Om) at the throat and then stopped. The daytime focus is the same as the previous focus, and they taught in a way that pointed towards the two non-conceptual states. Jagchen said, "Or, when enhancing the effects of the two focuses, do not meditate on those two themselves, but train the general intention of dreams." These are all said according to the authority of oral instructions. The twenty-second focus instruction. Second, training dreams: After gaining reliance on grasping dreams, it is necessary to train dreams. That is, this is a case where one abandons the focus when grasping dreams and focuses entirely on training. If one continuously meditates without abandoning the focus of grasping, then at the point where one grasps a dream every night, one should also meditate on the focus of training.
