I meditate on impurity, impermanence, suffering, etc., in the relative sense. Liberation is another name for freedom from what is to be abandoned. Because it is the entrance to the method, it is called a door. Secondly, compassion also has three aspects: compassion for sentient beings suffering in samsara due to afflictions is focused on sentient beings; compassion for sentient beings who are not free from momentary impermanence and have no essence is focused on phenomena; and compassion for sentient beings who are seen as being without inherent existence but do not understand this, and seeing that compassion itself is also without essence, is compassion without focus. The essence of compassion is the wish to completely separate suffering and its causes. These two are the root of enlightenment. As it is said in the Precious Garland: If you wish to attain unsurpassed enlightenment, its root is the mind of enlightenment, as stable as the king of mountains, and compassion that reaches to the ends of the directions, and wisdom that does not rely on duality. Thus, the mind of enlightenment, compassion, and the wisdom that realizes emptiness are taught as the three roots, and the first of these can also be spoken and taught. The third, the four immeasurables, are: loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Loving-kindness is the wish that limitless sentient beings may experience happiness like that of meditative absorption without end, and meditating with single-pointed mindfulness. Compassion is the wish that similar sentient beings may never experience any form of suffering. Joy is the joy that those who do not have the abundant joy and happiness of meditative absorption may have it, and that those who have it may not be separated from it. Equanimity is the wish that similar sentient beings may be able to abandon attachment, aversion, closeness, distance, happiness, suffering, and all eight worldly concerns, and that they may abide in the fourth dhyana. The latter three should also be meditated on with single-pointed mindfulness. All three of these also have three aspects, as explained above for compassion, such as focusing on sentient beings, namely, focusing on sentient beings themselves, and the unreal appearance of the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, and that also being the appearance of the object of non-object, thus dividing into three. Also, these are connected with aspirational prayers and with rejoicing.

In relation to equipment, it can also be distinguished by threes, making it easy to understand. The fourth is the six pāramitās, namely the six, such as giving. Regarding giving, there are four points: essence, distinction, classification, and the manner of giving. The first point is: the mind of giving reaches the ultimate perfection. The second point is: one must learn to practice the perfection of giving with four distinctions: the opposing side, miserliness, diminishes; giving, the object of giving, the recipient—these three spheres are grasped by emptiness, devoid of inherent existence; fulfilling and perfecting the intention of the recipient of the giving; and based on that, transforming it into a method of establishing any of the three types of enlightenment—these are the four distinctions. Alternatively, being grasped by the excellent mind of great vehicle bodhicitta, with the wisdom that realizes non-reality, for the sake of benefiting others, accomplishing Buddhahood, and expanding through dedication—these are the three distinctions, which is the perfection of giving. The third point is: the three types of giving—material giving, Dharma giving, and fearlessness giving. The first is: giving away possessions, children, wives, and even one's own life. The second is: being grasped by the mind of bodhicitta, speaking the pure Dharma that should be spoken. The third is: protecting others from the fears of this life and future lives. The fourth is the manner of giving: the basis is supreme, grasped by the mind of bodhicitta; the object is supreme, giving away all objects of giving; the purpose is supreme, for the sake of benefiting sentient beings; the method is supreme, grasped by non-conceptual wisdom; the dedication is supreme, dedicating the merit to complete enlightenment; the purity is supreme, having the function of preventing the two obscurations. In this way, giving with six supreme qualities, as well as giving at the right time, giving when needed, giving appropriately, and giving virtuously, must all be learned. The essence of ethics is: in general, abstaining from all non-virtue, and in particular, the thought of abandoning one's own mind of peace. The distinctions are as before, the four perfections or the three perfections. The classification is the three, such as abstaining from misconduct, which has already been explained above. The manner of guarding is: as before, the six supreme qualities, and treating the mind with immoral conduct that contradicts the subtle precepts, severing the root of its afflictions, and practicing ugliness, love, dependent origination, emptiness, etc.
