If the self is mind, then even if we examine the three times and so on separately as will be explained below, the self cannot be found. If the aggregates and essence are established as different entities, they should be identifiable like a horse and a cow, but they are not. And if the essence is different, then the qualities of the aggregates, such as cause and effect, arising, abiding, and ceasing, are not present in the self, so it becomes non-existent. And non-existence is not merely a designation; it is not established in reality. Therefore, the perception of "I" is nothing more than a designation by a deluded mind. This is called the selflessness of persons. The selflessness of phenomena is that all these outer and inner phenomena appear conventionally, but they are not established by valid cognition because they are illusory appearances. All phenomena do not exist because they do not arise in the causal state. If they arise, they arise from themselves, others, both, or without a cause. If they arise from themselves, then the arising of what has already arisen is meaningless, and since there is no end, arising would become endless. And the distinction between agent and object is contradictory for oneself. As it is said in the Root Wisdom, "If cause and effect are the same, then the producer and the produced become one." If they arise from others by their own nature, then all things that are causes and not causes should produce all things that are effects and not effects. As it is said, "If cause and effect are different, then cause and non-cause become the same." If they arise from both, then they will have the faults of both. If they arise from no cause, then they should arise in all places, times, and circumstances, or never arise. Arising sometimes in certain places and times is a sign that it depends on other causes. Furthermore, they have no inherent existence because, from the perspective of essence, they are separate from both one and many. As the great teacher Śāntarakṣita said, "When any object is analyzed, oneness is not found in it. For what is neither one nor not one, there is no multiplicity either." If we analyze, we cannot find an object that is one, and if there is no one, then many cannot be established, because many arise from the aggregation of one. The natures of one and many are contradictory. If the two are one, then one of them must not be, but one must precede the establishment of many. Therefore, by negating one, many are negated, and since there is no third possibility that is neither one nor many, it is delusion.

It is established that it is merely an appearance, but in reality, it is empty in nature. The reason is that coarse things can be divided into many parts, so they cannot be established as one. For example, a vase is not established as one in nature, because the spout, belly, and base, etc., are not each a vase, and there is no vase apart from these parts. If the vase exists in each part, then it will become many vases. This method can be extended to atoms. Atoms also have many parts that look in the four directions, up and down, so they cannot be established as one. If there is no part that does not look in any direction, then the mind cannot comprehend the atom, just like space. If one atom looks in all directions, then everything will dissolve into everything else. Therefore, if all things such as the five objects and the four elements are analyzed in detail, not even an atom can be found. The teacher Buddha Wisdom Foot also said: In the Kunzang Sadhana of Guhyasamaja, it says: "Because of the appearance of differences such as beginning and end, these forms and so on are not one. The extremely fine atoms are also invisible, so they are similar to forms that are not multiple. Even if the extremely small atoms have no parts, since there is no collection of many atoms, the nature of the earth mandala and so on does not exist here at all." This speaks of the analysis of the beginning and end of time, if one is not established, then the coarse thing composed of many will not be established, and it refutes the claim that extremely small atoms are indivisible. However, it cannot be said that it does not exist at all, because of what? As stated in the Compendium of the Great Vehicle: "Hell beings, hungry ghosts, animals, and humans, each in their own way, have different minds for the same thing, therefore it is believed that external objects are not established." Just as for a drop of water, five types of beings will appear with different appearances, so external objects do not exist, only the mind. The appearance of objects is an illusion caused by the habitual imprints left on the alaya consciousness. As stated in the Lankavatara Sutra: "The mind disturbed by habitual imprints will manifest objects, but there are actually no external objects, only the mind, and it is wrong to think that there are external objects." Furthermore, if external objects truly exist as they appear, then it would follow that all beings would be able to see the true nature of things, which would lead to the liberation of all beings. And, the apprehended and the apprehender cannot be established, because if they are connected by one nature, then
