Furthermore, according to your view, if the vows are completely severed from the root, then the vows must completely disappear. Rather, in the Kalachakra, even after receiving the secret empowerment, if a root downfall occurs, it is said that it can be restored through severe asceticism of severance. It is very strange that vows that do not exist from the root can be newly generated by severance alone. If you think that you can obtain the vows by requesting empowerment again, then, in order to purify the fundamental downfalls that have occurred, you should enter the mandala again. As it says, "If the lama curses, or the samaya becomes unrestrained, then draw the mandala and confess sins to the Sugatas." Here it speaks of purifying downfalls, not of taking vows. If you think that downfalls can be eliminated by obtaining it, then what is the need for severance and so on? Here it is said, "Those who appear to be wise and are arrogant, who speak nonsense for the sake of fame, they themselves are full of faults, but they strive to slander the good traditions of others." This is actually accusing the White Lotus. This is also what is to be said. Therefore, considering the vows of fundamental downfalls to be extremely harmful, never making them the basis of merit, and also the branch downfalls greatly hinder the attainment of higher merits, both will throw people into hell, and one will not be able to perform all the mantra activities and rituals. The so-called branch downfalls refer to the branches of the fundamental downfalls. The second is the summary: In general, although widely known, the reasonable aspects are reliance on the path, reliance on empowerment, and reliance on vows. The first is: the object, the Dharma, the teacher, the companion, and the Dharma to be practiced. The downfall that depends on the first (object) is the first fundamental downfall. There are two kinds of companions: the true companion and the inverted companion. The wrong attachment to the first companion is the third and the twelfth. The tenth depends on the second companion. There are two kinds of Dharma: the scriptural Dharma and the realized Dharma. Slandering the scriptural Dharma is the sixth, and teaching to those who should not be taught is the seventh. There are three kinds of realized Dharma: the fourth and fifth depend on the cause and effect of the mind of enlightenment, which is the basis of the path. Transcending the general training of entering the Bodhisattva path is the second. The nature of the path is the eighth, which depends on the deity yoga, and the emptiness.

The ninth and eleventh (root downfalls) depend on (the guru) himself. Combining these two into the practice of generation and completion stages contradicts what one has said in common with the Yoga Tantra. Regarding the limbs of the path, the thirteenth (root downfall) contradicts the vows of enjoying the two, and the fourteenth (root downfall) contradicts the companions of the path. The second case is: the first, seventh, and twelfth (root downfalls) are of the general empowerment; the eighth and tenth (root downfalls) are of the multiple empowerments; the ninth and eleventh (root downfalls) are of the two four empowerments; the thirteenth (root downfall) is of the secret empowerment; and the fourteenth (root downfall) is the breaking of the vows of wisdom and prajna. This is said in terms of the majority of cases. In reality, all four empowerments contain all parts of these fourteen (root downfalls). The third case is: within the Vajra family vows, the first root downfall contradicts the Vajra master's vow; the second, third, and twelfth root downfalls contradict taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha; the fourth and fifth root downfalls contradict the general bodhicitta of the five families; the sixth root downfall contradicts the Lotus family vow, which is to study all vehicles; the seventh root downfall contradicts the Ratna family vow, which is to give impurely the Dharma giving among the four kinds of giving; the eighth root downfall contradicts the mudra body vow; the ninth and eleventh root downfalls contradict the Vajra speech vow; giving impurely with love is the tenth root downfall; the thirteenth and fourteenth root downfalls contradict the need to make offerings for the karma vow. Third, the final analysis is: here, some Kalachakra practitioners sequentially connect refuge, bodhicitta, the four empowerments, and conduct with their contradictions. Therefore, one must also know how to protect them in that order. If someone says that the latter two do not need to be protected now, that is a misunderstanding of the key points of the path, which is very bad. For example, it is like saying that a newly ordained monk does not need to protect against killing, but only needs to protect after becoming an elder. For a beginner, there is no need to protect, but rather those who practice conduct: Vows Completely liberated from discipline. What is more amazing than those who are liberated from mundane precepts needing to protect? In this way, it seems that for all those who have taken the five family vows, except for the thirteenth root downfall, these root downfalls will become faults of the vows. The enjoyment vow that arises from the thirteenth root downfall
