Derived from the word "earth," it also encompasses the meanings of wealth and abundance. Therefore, it refers to all the wondrous dharmas that arise from the power of samadhi. A limb signifies skill, and because it serves as a means and messenger for attaining it, it is called a foot. Just as those with feet are able to walk, go back and forth, and subdue others. The object of focus remains the same as before. The aspiration to attain samadhi, the diligence that leaves no room for distraction, the conduct of reflecting on oneself and possessing mindfulness, the abiding in tranquility that rests on the object of focus, and the mind that controls the mind. The three, aspiration and so forth, are also unrelated to distraction, but are practiced in conjunction with samadhi that focuses single-pointedly on the object of focus. The previous two sections are also included here for practice. Among the five faculties, the object of aspiration is the Four Noble Truths, and faith arises towards the Three Jewels, karma, and its results. Because of faith, rejoicing in virtuous dharmas and striving is diligence, holding onto the meaning generated by diligence without forgetting is mindfulness, taking the undiminished dharma as primary through mindfulness is samadhi, and knowing the nature of dharma with single-mindedness through samadhi is wisdom. Because it has power over the arising of dharmas that transcend the world, it is a faculty. Although the five, faith and so forth, exist from the beginning, they are called faculties when they have autonomy and stability over the object of focus. These faculties themselves are not destroyed by opposing factors such as disbelief, and the ability to abandon them, which is even greater than before, is the five powers. Among the seven branches of enlightenment, enlightenment is non-dual wisdom, the realization of reality as it is, and because it is its cause, it is a branch. With true enlightenment, the meaning of benefiting others, aspiration and listening, and the mindfulness that has no forgetting of realization, the two kinds of selflessness, and the discrimination that knows the characteristics of the self and common characteristics of all dharmas without confusion, the extreme pliancy of becoming one with the nature of dharma without effort, the immeasurable joy in the cause of benefit and happiness, and the samadhi of single-mindedness on suchness, and the diligence of निश्चित निर्याण niścita niryāṇa (certain departure) from the ground of ordinary beings.
