The three appearances, increase, and attainment: the three emptinesses of emptiness, great emptiness, and utter emptiness; the three of mind, mental factors, and ignorance; and the three of desire, detachment, and intermediate desire—these are unique terms that originate from the secret mantra. Similarly, there are also the terms wisdom, means, and hermaphrodite. Most of these are mentioned in this text. Although some are not mentioned, they will be supplemented and explained here. Among these, appearance is so named because it is a small manifestation of wisdom. It is also empty of its own cause, discursive thoughts, and winds, and because a slight clarity arises in the emptiness of reality, it is called the first emptiness. Although all three of bliss, clarity, and emptiness are present, it is called wisdom because bliss is emphasized. Here, the clarity aspect is small, so bliss and emptiness are equal. It is well known that emptiness is established as wisdom. It is also well known in these teachings that bliss is established as the dharma of women and clarity as the dharma of men, and reason also establishes it as consistent with dharma. By accumulating the causes and conditions of the stages of dissolution, it is also called mind. It is also called mind because the initial awareness of appearance as mind is wisdom. Furthermore, if considered in terms of the three fundamental appearances of the ground stage, the six entering consciousnesses are produced by appearance, so they are named in relation to the chief, mind. Because this arises from the power of the fundamental mind, it is also named after it. Other-dependence is merely consciousness. Because the initial awareness of clarity arises in it, it is named the power of other. Because the nature of the six entering consciousnesses slightly experiences emptiness, the name of the object is applied to the subject, and it is called discriminating consciousness. From the perspective of the companion discursive thoughts, it is named aversion. Although it is bliss, it is called detachment because the amount is small. Although bliss and emptiness are equal, it is called the nature of emptiness because the nature of bliss is not well known, and it is spoken of from the perspective of emptiness. Thus, the enumeration of names has been completed. The discursive thoughts that arise and originate from that appearance, called the nature of appearance, and those that clearly arise, will now be well explained. Among these, detachment is essentially aversion, not to the object.

Attachment to suffering is threefold, distinguished by size. Among them, slight attachment, where the manner of attachment is not clear, is small; although clear, it is brief, etc., unable to initiate action, is medium; clear and lasting, able to motivate action, is large. The mind going outward is the mind directed towards external objects, and returning is the mind directed inward; both are mind. Sorrow is the suffering of separation from a pleasing object, and the three sizes are of the nature of attachment and detachment. Quiescence is like entering blankly as if tired and weary, not a state of awareness. Discrimination is the consciousness that mixes names and meanings and clings to characteristics. Fear is fright, and this also has three sizes. Craving is attachment arising from pleasant objects occurring in the three times, and this also has three types. Grasping is the desire to enter the realm of existence. Discomfort from hunger and thirst are two. Feeling is pleasure, pain, equanimity, etc., distinguished by size, and there are three. The knower, that is, actual knowledge; "knowing" refers to the one who knows; the basis of clinging, that is, the wrong view of taking what is not that as that for the objects of knowledge, and the distinctions of these three objects are threefold. Discriminating between what is reasonable and unreasonable. Knowing shame is when oneself becomes bad or does not want to become bad, or avoids doing bad deeds out of concern for others' blame; even if there is shame, it is included here. Compassion, wishing others to be free from suffering, and loving-kindness, wishing beings pleasing to oneself to be united with happiness, is love; if distinguished, there are three sizes, or it is said that wishing external objects to be pleasing and happy, and wishing to be protected from harm, there are three. Doubt, associated with hesitation, having a dejected appearance, and lacking confidence. Stinginess, unwilling to let go, is wanting to hide, that is, hoarding. Agitation of mind at the prosperity of others is jealousy, so there are thirty-three in total. From attachment and detachment to jealousy, these thirty-three naturally occurring discriminations are what arise in the minds of beings themselves. All these discriminations abide in the nature of self-awareness, which is self-knowing, without appearance and without discrimination.
