appears in awareness. When its wind force subsides and transforms into another state, it remains in the nature of habit. Therefore, all the natures of the three root minds, through the power of the wind's moving nature, which is one with its own essence, cause the nature of the cause to be clear or unclear, and the nature of the result to be clear or unclear, to appear sequentially in the minds of sentient beings. Each stage appears in an unmistakable sequence, which is the infallible order of dependent origination. This root mind, which has become the nature of appearance, increase, and attainment, is what is spoken of in the sutras as the ālaya-vijñāna (storehouse consciousness). Regarding this, many texts known as the Father Tantras of Cakrasamvara say: The characteristics of the three appearances described in the context of mental isolation, and the characteristics of the ālaya and klesha-manas (afflicted mind) described in the Yogācāra texts, are not the same, so the three appearances and those are not the same. Some say this. In the commentary on the Essence of Wisdom, Root Verses, Four and Three Entrances, by Chandrakirti, it is thought that he does not accept the ālaya-vijñāna as something other than the six consciousnesses. To this, it is said: Is there or is there not an ālaya-vijñāna other than the six consciousnesses in the knowable? If there is, what is the reason why it is never mentioned in the root tantra of Cakrasamvara? If it does not exist, then it is not reasonable for the appearances, etc., mentioned here to be the same as the ālaya and klesha-manas, because there is no ālaya and klesha-manas other than the six consciousnesses in the knowable. It is reasonable to say this. But what is the use of citing contradiction with the Yogācāra texts as a reason? If that text is without error, then the ālaya and klesha-manas of the eight consciousnesses would exist. If it does not conform to valid cognition, then what is the point of saying, "It is not so, because it is different from what is said there"? Because even if it contradicts the statement of that text, it may still be so. Although the author of the Entering Commentary and the author of the Lamp Illuminating may be the same person, even in verses and single sentences, the style of writing and the manner of expression are clearly different, which shows that their realization or wisdom is different. Therefore, there is no contradiction in the emergence of different philosophical tenets. Noble Father

Moreover, in the sutra systems such as the 'Ocean of Wisdom' (Rig tsogs) of the Holy Son (Avalokiteśvara), there is absolutely no clear statement denying the ālaya-vijñāna. Furthermore, the Buddha teaches the Dharma according to the thoughts of sentient beings. Therefore, it is not necessary to align with the terminology of those texts in every respect. The reason for this is as previously stated. Therefore, here, whatever is composed by the Holy Father and Son (Asaṅga and Vasubandhu) and Chandrakirti, must conform to texts such as the 'Entering the Path of Enlightenment' (Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra), including the 'Ocean of Wisdom'. This is because the author is the same, and they are speakers of a definitive and profound philosophical system. To say such things is the conceptualization of those with inferior minds, who are bewildered by the realm of the inconceivable, and who use sophistry to cover up the holy ones, merely chattering on for fear of the slightest deviation in their own established philosophical positions. If, in the time of the Holy Father and Son, all of India were adherents of the 'Ocean of Wisdom', that would be unreasonable, because we see many debates between the Śrāvakas and the Tirthikas. There are all kinds of disciples with different capacities, but there is no reason why there should only be those who are capable of hearing about the eight consciousnesses. Alternatively, if one does not understand the different thoughts of the disciples, or even if one understands, one is unable to teach the Dharma in accordance with their capacities, then one is greatly obscured by ignorance. If one is able to teach but does not, then one is negligent in compassion. Therefore, the treatises composed by them may also be errors arising from not understanding, or even if understanding, they may not be able to teach truthfully. If one teaches the Dharma in accordance with the thoughts of sentient beings, then what contradiction is there in teaching the eight consciousnesses on other occasions? Just like the teacher, the Buddha himself. Therefore, in the Tripiṭaka and the four Tantras, etc., in both the Great and Small Vehicles, although the ultimate intention is only one, various different classifications arise in establishing the three: the conventional basis, path, and result. The Buddha does not teach what is impossible to know, but only teaches methods for accomplishing temporary purposes. Moreover, the speaker is the same, so there is no fault in having different ways of teaching. Therefore, to plant a few grains from many treatises to slander is a very great fault, understand this! It has gone too far. Second, the appearance that arises in special times.
