If one does not know the suchness, one will not become a Buddha. Thus spoke the Bhagavan. Furthermore, one should listen from the door of the scriptures to what is the self-nature of suchness. Because the Mahayana practitioners and logicians, etc., abide in this very meaning and contemplate suchness in various ways, in order to gather them together, please, Bhagavan, explain what this suchness is. The Vajra Master said: What is true is suchness. Question: Bhagavan, what is meant by true? Answer: That which does not deceive is called true. Question: What is meant by not deceiving? Answer: The samadhi that is the nature of extreme truth is called not deceiving. Question: What is the samadhi that is the nature of truth? Answer: That which is characterized by the aspect of non-duality of the two truths is the samadhi that is the nature of truth. Question: Bhagavan, what are the two truths? Answer: The first is the conventional truth, and the second is the ultimate truth. And this order of connecting these two in union is the samadhi that is the nature of truth, and that which is the complete pacification of all objects is called suchness. Thus it is said. Samadhi is also called one-pointed awareness, but it is not newly attained through an object, because that cannot be the suchness of the reality of things. The union of the two truths is also not just the fifth stage of the union stage, because that would make the preceding words irrelevant. Therefore, the nature of phenomena named in the causal continuum is originally the wisdom of union. Among the Tibetan holy ones, Je Gos also holds this view. In the emptiness teachings of the Gos tradition, it says: the mantra of the continuum of the cause, and the mantra of the continuum of means, and the mantra of the continuum of the result. The nature of the first is: the spontaneously arisen mind of Samantabhadra. Even if there is only defilement, it has not become the nature of defilement, nor has it been defiled.

The knowledge of the self-nature luminosity, experiencing and knowing, the clarity is all the seeds (Tibetan: ས་བོན་ཐམས་ཅད་, Sanskrit Devanagari: सर्वाणि बीजानि, Sanskrit Romanization: sarvāṇi bījāni, Chinese literal meaning: all seeds)." It is said like this. Moreover, it is considered to have the characteristics of eighty self-natures with distinction and three appearances without distinction. Marpa Lotsawa also said: "There are two kinds of continuums of cause, namely the common and the uncommon continuum. The common that pervades is the common, that is, the element continuum of all sentient beings, which has the nature of the Tathagatagarbha, and exists in all temporary defilements. 'The self-nature is inherently luminous, possessing the Tathagatagarbha, existing in all embodied beings, and being defiled by temporary defilements.' This is its meaning. The uncommon continuum of cause is the cause of the situation of sentient beings, the path of the yogi's practice, and the three fruits of the perfectly complete Buddha. When the appearance of the knowable becomes common, the appearance methods are different. The cause appears as a delusion in sentient beings, the path appears as an experience in the yogi, and the fruit appears as an inexhaustible wheel of ornaments in the perfectly complete Buddha. It is said that the meaning is very good, and the disciples explain according to their respective situations. The function of the cause continuum is, as stated in the 《Later Continuum》: 'Emaho, the continuation of samsara, Emaho, the supreme nirvana.' It means that the situation of samsara, the enjoyment of various kinds, and the various kinds of Buddha bodies and pure land activities of nirvana, all of these are integrated into the inseparable union of self-nature, and all things that are in accordance with the conditions will appear. This is really amazing, so it is said Emaho. The continuation of samsara from beginningless time arises from this, but it is not contaminated by the Dharma of samsara. Once those defilements are purified, even if nirvana is attained, it is not newly acquired, but has never left the original. Although this is not the cause that directly produces the phenomena of samsara and nirvana, because with it, those phenomena will arise, and because it is similar to the form of the cause of birth, it is called the cause. The 《Vajra Peak Sutra》 also says: 'The continuum is continuous, samsara is considered to be the continuum, the other shore is called the later, and nirvana is the later continuum.' and so on,

Similarly, the Sutra on the Abhidharma states: "The realm of beginningless time is the basis of all phenomena. Because of it, all beings and even Nirvana can be attained." Also, the Ornament of the Sutras states: "Just as when water is initially turbid, its clarity is not born from that, but merely the removal of impurities from it; similarly, the nature of one's own mind is like that. The mind always desires to be inherently luminous, but it is corrupted by adventitious faults. Another mind apart from the nature of mind is said to be non-luminous in nature." The glorious Saraha also said: "The mind alone is the seed of all things, from which arise samsara and Nirvana. It bestows the fruits of desires, I prostrate to the mind like a wish-fulfilling jewel." Furthermore, the Praise of the Dharmadhatu states: "That which is the cause of samsara, when purified, that purity is Nirvana, that itself is the Dharmakaya." Thus it is. How samsara arises from that, the root tantra states: "The body is unchanging and unborn, speech and mind are also the same. The wisdom of space vajra arises from conceptualization, it is grasped by wrong apprehension." Also, the Compendium of All Vajra Wisdom states: "That which arises from luminosity, that consciousness is called mind, intellect, and consciousness, and it is the root of all dharmas, the nature of being both completely defiled and completely purified. From that, two kinds of conceptualization arise, namely self and other. The vehicle of consciousness is wind, from wind comes fire, from fire comes water, from water comes earth. From these arise the five aggregates, the six sense bases, and the five objects; all of these are mixed with consciousness." Thus it is said. By the power of the mind's nature being non-conceptual, there arises what is called the root consciousness, which is the mind of the three non-conceptual appearances mixed into one. From that arises the consciousness of mind that appears as grasper and grasped, which is conceptual. These generate all the dharmas of complete defilement and complete purification. Among them, the conceptualization that appears as self is the afflicted mind, and the conceptualization that appears as other is the consciousness of mind. From that arise the four elements, and from that arise the five aggregates.
