I prostrate to the Vajra Master, who possesses the qualities of union. Among these, the union of the non-learner is the best. Why is that? Because the union of the learner only slightly abandons the two grasps, while only the non-learner completely abandons everything. Having finished praising in this way, I vow to compose a treatise: called "The Stages of Union." Among the five stages, I will write about the classifications of the last stage. The term "stages" here generally refers to the stages of the path, and it should be understood that this refers only to the boundaries divided into separate stages. Entering the main text, I will first briefly explain the meaning: Ancient masters believed that there are three types of union here: called the union of appearance, which is the inseparability of the deity's body and emptiness, quoting "All things with characteristics are delusions," etc. Called the union of cessation, which is the realization that all elaborations of difference are without self-nature, quoting "Samsara and Nirvana," etc. Called the union of connection, such as the realization that emptiness and great compassion are inseparable, quoting "Wisdom and great compassion," etc. They believe that the twenty-one characteristics of union, etc., are all contained in these three unions, and that the three characteristics of union are also contained in one union. I have not found any fault with this view. Some also believe that the union of pure illusory body and clear light, which is the gathering in one aggregate, is the main part of union. The inseparability of samsara and nirvana, etc., is based on the realization of reality with the wisdom of bliss. Although the two grasps are abandoned at the time of realizing the clear light of meaning, that wisdom has not yet arisen. As soon as one arises from the clear light, the wisdom of realizing non-duality arises, so this is only a general union. Because it arises from the clear light, the union of body and clear light does not exist immediately after obtaining union. Therefore, the union at that time is this general union. They believe that this also appears at the end of the reversal of the three appearances, from the lamp to the mirage, in the manner of the reversal of the five signs. Furthermore, as soon as one arises from the clear light, the body is new and did not exist before, and at that time the mind is clear light.

Although not abiding in equality, due to the external five signs arising in sequence, and the three stages of appearance, increase, and attainment preceding, one abides in the meaning of clear light. After that, there is no rising, and from that, the main union is attained. As soon as one arises from the meaning of clear light, the body of union is accomplished. There is only this one time of rising from the meaning of clear light, and there is no other. The illusory body of the third stage is accomplished from the bliss of mental isolation, so it is destroyed at the time of the meaning of clear light. This is accomplished by the meaning of clear light, so it is without interruption and will not be destroyed. Thus it is explained. This needs to be analyzed as follows: cutting off the conceptual thoughts of samsara and nirvana is explained as union, and the illusory body merging into clear light is explained as union. If these two unions belonging to the stages of union each have different numbers, because others also have the same reasoning, the boundaries of the establishment of union will become very numerous. For the union of the fifth stage, there must also arise unions that are only Sutra Path, and unions of the Lesser Vehicle, etc. Therefore, the twenty-three unions mean that one union itself possesses the nature or characteristics of twenty-three unions. However, it is not that there is no distinction between main and secondary. The non-learner is the main, the learner is the secondary, and even within the learner, the union that is the root, the Sambhogakaya path, is the main, and the union that is the branch, the Nirmanakaya path, is the secondary. Samadhi is the main, and post-meditation is the secondary. It is also unreasonable that one only rises once from the meaning of clear light into the body of union, because it is said that "for the benefit of sentient beings, it appears many times," thus explaining rising many times. Just the phrase "will arise from clear light" alone, saying that the body of union is newly produced from a previous interruption, is not reasonable. If it were produced in that way, the term "rising" would not apply. For example, a person waking up from sleep, standing up from a seat, a fish leaping from the water, are not newly produced at that time, but the term "rising" is applied to things with great differences in different forms of change. Therefore, even in the case of the third stage, although the winds, mind, and bliss originally exist in the form of deities, one has never seen them before.
