Etc., can also be understood by analogy, but what is clear and extensive is understood from Āryadeva's Compendium of Practice. In the Compendium of Practice, it says: As long as there is the sustenance of the aggregates, the nature of the three consciousnesses, that is, the appearance of nature, will appear to self and others. How does it appear? First, it is appearance, second, it is nature. It revolves with the wind in all ten directions, and that is because of what? Because of desire, non-desire, and the middle of desire, etc., and also the fierce, the peaceful, the joyful, the sorrowful, the hungry, the thirsty, and feelings, etc., one hundred and sixty natures are contemplated day and night, and ignorance naturally ceases, and then arises again, turning from samsara to samsara by the power of the wind. Therefore, after washing the body, as long as the senses such as the eyes focus on the objects, they will continue to focus on them, because they have been accustomed to it since beginningless time. Then, accustomed from one life to another, by learning the dharma of selflessness, one understands the yoga of mixing, and the appearance of nature should be mixed with it. In this order, one should focus on the ultimate truth. Its order is like this: the aggregates, etc., are placed in the subtle realm, the subtle realm is placed in the mind, the mind is placed in the mental factors, and the mental factors are placed in ignorance. Having combined in this way, one falls asleep. At this time, the moment when the mind and mental factors are absorbed into ignorance is the forgetting of memory. Afterwards, the nature of the wisdom of non-forgetting is luminosity. Again, when walking, one obtains the nature of wind, and therefore other dreams arise. As long as consciousness does not move, one continues to sleep and look at luminosity. That is the ultimate truth of being aware of oneself separately, apart from body, speech, and mind, called inner manifest enlightenment. In this order, the assemblies of the Tathāgatas abiding in the mandala of the body should be concealed, and if they are placed in suchness, one will obtain the siddhi of good fortune.

Thus it is said. Although this was said in the context of mixing sleep and clear light in a very unelaborate practice, the way to mix sleep and clear light is not a special dharma of that practice, but is the same for all. That is, as long as there is a ripened aggregate, no matter how good the experience, one will experience the appearance of self and other, happiness and suffering, high and low, wealth and poverty. This is because there are three appearances in the mind that have the seeds of affliction, and relying on the movement of the wind, the stream of seeds of the natures arises into manifestation, and the coarse afflictions act. Also, when falling asleep, the wind of conceptual thought subsides slightly, and the three appearances arise in sequence, and ignorance, that is, attainment, also ceases for a moment in the clear light of sleep. Also, waking up from that and the arising of the three appearances, etc., the habitual imprints of beginningless time are awakened by the wind, causing the sense consciousness to move towards the object and experience happiness and suffering. So, which comes first, sense consciousness or the conceptual thought of nature? Because they are mutually dependent, it is impossible to determine in general. However, in a single series of arising, nature precedes sense consciousness. That is, first, in the state of clear light, the three appearances exist in a latent state. When waking up from clear light, the three appearances manifest. Although at that moment, the natures cannot immediately arise from the latent state, at that time the appearance is moved by the wind, so in the second moment, a conceptual thought of nature arises into manifestation, and with that momentary conceptual thought moving towards the object as a condition, sense consciousness that grasps the object arises. Therefore, it is conceptual thought that awakens the senses. Following sense consciousness, again feelings, perceptions, attachment, aversion, etc., arise as many conceptual thoughts of nature, but that is another series. Therefore, like this, when the cause is habit and the condition is wind and thought awakening, the result is that sense consciousness experiences happiness and suffering, and this is considered a single series. When a previous sense consciousness arises and encounters an object, the clarity, awareness, and clear light of the mind at the time of that sense consciousness are simultaneous with the experience of the object.
