Even without (other qualities), one should have respect for the lama, viewing the lama as inseparable from all Buddhas, which is also a suitable vessel. Generally speaking, possessing excellent wisdom, understanding the meaning of the Dharma spoken by the Buddhas, and possessing steadfast courage and vows, and having great faith in the Dharma and individuals, is a suitable vessel at this time, so the grace of oral instructions should be bestowed upon them. Here, the meaning of "or else" is that if other qualities are complete, that is good, or even if there are no other qualities, those who have extreme respect for the lama should be accepted. Thus it is said. If there is no extreme respect for the lama, then even if there is wisdom and diligence, etc., it is of no benefit. Even if one has heard many tantras and is well-versed in the teachings of the three pitakas, but due to arrogance, one is separated from serving the lama, and because of insufficient service, one's own mindstream is not tamed, and the teacher is not pleased, so one does not receive the transmission of profound oral instructions, which is because one has not entered into the blessing. Even the slightest practice that is beneficial to oneself is not under one's control, and if one meditates but there is no result, then the hope of maturing and liberating others is cut off. In some versions, the phrase "lips of the teachings" appears, while in some versions, "teachings mouth" appears, the latter being more correct. "Lips" refers to the meaning of being full and complete. Also, "ga yi chu wa" is an ancient term for emphasis. Even without the adornment of the lama's words, relying solely on seeing the teachings, one only understands partially, or without reason, one stubbornly adheres to wrong views. Thus speaking, the two are not contradictory, but here it is understood as the meaning of becoming arrogant simply by seeing the teachings. In some versions, the phrase "power of the teachings" appears, and some commentaries also explain this, but it seems to be a textual error. Therefore, those teachings that are understood are of no benefit to oneself or others, but are merely a cause for boredom. Furthermore, if others have the good fortune to have respect for the lama and have received the true oral instructions, and are naturally intelligent and not foolish, able to understand the meaning of the Dharma and apply it to practice, then they have the ability to practice for their own benefit, being proficient in the words of the tantras and teachings.
