Those who know the distinctions of naturally appearing phenomena, that is, having attained mind isolation, and that fourth one, that is, the fourth instant of attainment, all emptiness is attained by the luminosity of example. Although it depends on the manifestation of the illusory body, whoever does not train in the three modes of conduct will not attain the fruit of union in this life. For example, although the element of fire resides in wood, fire will not arise if it is not rubbed. Similarly, although from the beginning the nature of mind abides in the great mandala of bliss and emptiness, if one is separated from the three practices of training in enlightenment, that yogi will not attain the fruit of Mahamudra in this very life. After the meaning of the third root has been explained, it is to examine the vessel and dedicate the merit. The first is: Those who have deceitful minds and are lazy, see the faults of the guru's afflictions and not the qualities. They slander the guru, become arrogant thinking they have received empowerment. Those with inferior intelligence and malicious minds will not attain perfect complete enlightenment. They desire to attain it quickly without service and reverence. They become angry and deceitful, saying, "This is not the true word." When they see the guru in the assembly, they turn their backs. Then, when they go to a secluded place, they prostrate. Thus, such a student with an evil nature and inferior qualities, even if he is one's own son, should be completely abandoned like a stranger. Even if he is born of royal or noble lineage, he should be firmly kept away at all times. One who possesses excellent qualities, wisdom, and diligence, or who reveres the guru as equal to the Buddha, understands the teachings of the Victorious Ones, is steadfast and very devoted, because he is a suitable vessel, so bestow kindness upon him. Although one has heard many tantras and is well-versed in the scriptures, but because of insufficient service and reverence to the guru, one has not received the transmission of the scriptures. That person has no power even to benefit himself, he is just a parrot repeating the scriptures. His teachings are merely a cause for sorrow. Or, if one is fortunate and has received that instruction, if that person is not foolish and is able to apply the meaning, and engages greatly in the power of the mind to benefit others, even if he does not have the qualities of speech, he will be despised. Having heard many tantras, possessing knowledge, knowing the six places, and having steadfast memory and intelligence, and possessing abundant diligence.

endowed. Having honored the feet of the Lama and received that lineage, it is appropriate to teach with this Tantric King's instruction. These words are easy to understand, but to explain a little: A deceitful person is the cause of impure vows. A lazy person is not a vessel for instructions because they are distracted from meditation. As long as one harbors deceit and laziness, let alone the experience of complete mental solitude, not even a single extraordinary secret mantra experience will arise. In particular, those who slander the Lama or become arrogant simply by receiving empowerment, and develop the pride of a Vajra Master, those with inferior intelligence will not attain the state of omniscient Buddhahood for a while. Due to the fact that one's own mindstream is filled with afflictions, one sees the Lama's actions as faults, and does not know that qualities are qualities, nor does one offer and respect the Lama with wealth and conduct, but instead, in a complaining manner, merely, Desiring to quickly obtain the instructions without waiting, and angrily saying, "This Lama is not authentic, but uses deceptive words and lies," thereby wavering and proclaiming faults. Some examples say, "If the words are not gentle, one will become angry and waver," meaning one cannot bear the Lama's direct or indirect reprimands. Also, some, not abandoning the arrogance of desiring greatness, even if they see the Lama in a gathering of many people, do not prostrate with their backs turned, and then, when the Lama is alone, they go there and prostrate. There are also such types. Such a student with a bad nature and little merit, even if he is one's own son, should be completely abandoned like an unrelated person. Even if he is born of a noble royal family or aristocratic family, the steadfast teacher should never keep him by his side. Furthermore, the vessel for teaching the instructions is as follows: Endowed with excellent qualities such as discipline and faith, intelligent and clear-minded, possessing wisdom, diligently striving to cultivate the path, or intelligent and diligent, etc.
