In reality, samsara has never existed. Because from the mind arise manifest afflictions, various afflictions accumulate various karmas, and from this, various sufferings befall one, established through experience. If one thinks that it can also be established through scripture and reasoning. Then, through cultivating the path, karma, afflictions, and suffering become smaller and smaller, and the qualities of merit increase more and more, established through experience. Once the fruition is realized, all the faults of samsara that previously existed will be exhausted at that time, and all the merits that were previously absent will be newly obtained, which can also be obtained through reasoning, so it is not permissible to think that samsara originally did not exist, etc. So, such a sequence of samsara, path, and fruition is merely an appearance of mental delusion. All the phenomena of samsara have never existed, but like someone with blurred vision seeing hairs in the sky, they appear due to delusion. Through cultivating the path, it appears as if faults are abandoned and merits are attained, for example, when someone with blurred vision looks at the surface of a mountain that is far and uneven, they cannot see any grass, trees, rocks, or animals on the surface of the mountain. Although they are not actually present on the surface of the mountain, they will see various images of blurred vision such as hairs, circular halos, and net-like patterns. When the blurred vision becomes smaller and smaller through taking eye medicine, etc., the hairs, etc., on the surface of the mountain appear to decrease, and the trees, rocks, etc., appear to increase. Therefore, the mountain is a metaphor for the mind, the hairs, etc., are metaphors for karma, afflictions, and suffering, and the grass and trees, etc., are metaphors for merit. Hairs, etc., have never existed before, so they will not decrease later, it is only that the defect of the eye is purified and the delusion disappears. The grass and trees, etc., have not become more numerous than before, but rather what was previously obscured by obscurations is now newly seen. Similarly, the phenomena of samsara are not established in reality, so they will not decrease, but only the delusion becomes smaller. The qualities of merit are originally present in the mind, so they will not newly arise or increase, but rather what was previously obscured by obscurations is now seen more widely as the obscurations become thinner. When the blurred vision clears, the hairs, etc., disappear.

Although one sees what is not seen, and sees it covered with grass and trees, etc., just as the trimmed hair is not newly grown grass and trees, etc., when one attains Buddhahood, samsara is completely non-existent, and the very nature of mind, which manifests as the nature of all pervasive qualities, is also not something to be removed from samsara, nor is it a newly arisen quality. Rather, it is simply that the qualities that have been present in one's own mind from the beginning are seen directly because delusion has ceased. As it is said, "There is nothing other than the two apprehensions that arise, therefore liberation is simply the exhaustion of error." This is called the meaning of non-elimination and non-establishment, that is, there is nothing to be eliminated here, and there is nothing to be established. Another example of non-elimination and non-establishment is that a person seeking a pond mistakes the pond for a stone platform when walking on the road at night. When dawn breaks, he knows it is a pond, but the stone platform is not eliminated, and the pond is not established. This can be related to the appearance of a conch shell as yellow, etc. In this case, if the meditative experience is applied to a moment, an experience of emptiness-form and bliss-clarity will arise. That is the nirvana of self-nature. It is not newly established, but is the original state. Although it has always been present in oneself, one has not experienced it, has not realized it, and has not manifested it until one has met the valid instructions. Now, through special methods such as doing and binding, one sees it a little. At the very moment when the experience of clarity-emptiness-bliss arises, a conceptual thought such as good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant suddenly arises. It stays for a moment, then disappears, and then other thoughts appear to arise, and so on. In this way, the appearance of thoughts as arising, abiding, and ceasing is delusion. If one looks at its own face, from where does it arise? Where does it abide? How does it cease? By applying such indications, it is not in any place, it does not abide in any state, it cannot be determined at any time, it does not appear in any form, and it is not established in any essence. Therefore, conceptual thought has never existed from the beginning. Therefore, the appearance of existence is only an illusion. Since it has never existed, who will arise? Who will abide? Who will cease? This conceptual thought is samsara, it is sudden, it appears even though it does not exist. Therefore, conceptual thought cannot be eliminated, and clarity-emptiness-bliss cannot be established, so there is no thought or establishment for the nature of reality.
