etc. Suchness-object meditation, etc., Tathagata's virtuous meditation, if a yogi strives, then he sees shapes like the sun and moon, like light and lotus, like a painted sky's flame. Those various signs are the guides of non-Buddhists. Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas also fall into the realm of practice. All these are completely abandoned, and when they become without appearance, then the hands of the Buddhas and gods, taken from all the fields, anoint his head, as a sign of truly following. Thus it was said. Those who are led by the appearance of signs, these become the path of non-Buddhists or Hinayana. The meditation of Mahayana is something without any appearance, so those who think and speak are appearances. To them it is said: You have not understood the meaning of the sutras, nor have you seen the meaning of the sutras explained by the wise, so it seems, and you have not distinguished the differences between them, so it seems. To them, the meaning of those sutra words is: Meditating on impermanence of conditioned things and impure samadhi, etc., is the antidote to the four inversions of ordinary beings, which is the practice of a child; understanding the meaning of the two selflessnesses, and separately understanding with reason, is the excellent discernment; and obtaining clear appearance in suchness beyond the path of joining is the object of suchness; the samadhi of the Buddhas is always in accordance with virtue, and those who directly see suchness, their samadhi is always free from defilement, which is called the Tathagata's virtuous meditation. From the habituation of these, the shapes of the sun and moon, etc., many images of the realm of practice arise from samadhi. Furthermore, the appearance of copper light is also described in the third ground, which is similar to these, so it is not meant that relying on those signs leads to straying into the path of non-Buddhists and Hinayana, but the signs seen in the state of the first three meditations such as the practice of a child, and the common four meditations and four formless absorptions of the same kind as non-Buddhists, and the experience of limitless samadhi in accordance with the tenets of non-Buddhists, appear in this way.

That Sugata's virtuous meditation is generally possessed by all Mahayana Aryas, but because it is cultivated in the seven impure grounds, here also arise many appearances of visible signs, and subtle self-serving thoughts, etc., experiences of samadhi that are similar in nature to the paths of Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Those experiences are also conventional appearances, and although they are also part of the illusion associated with the previous conceptualizations of signs, each one also purifies many similar obscurations, and because many qualities arise, they are also included in the path. Then, at the end of the seventh ground, all of that is also abandoned and becomes what is called the absence of appearance, the mind abiding in the reality of the absence of conventional appearance, it transforms into the eighth ground, and at that time one receives empowerment by the hands of immeasurable Buddhas. Thereafter, although there are meditative equipoise and subsequent attainment in relation to various samadhis, and the rising and falling of samadhi, generally there is no time when one is not in meditative equipoise, and because all of that is only focused on freedom from elaboration, that mind is always going on the right path. That is the meaning. The so-called absence of appearance also refers only to the absence of conventional appearance, otherwise, because there is empowerment by the hands of the Buddhas, and also the sutra says: When the mind is transformed, the immeasurable palace like a lotus, when the realm of illusion arises, then it is the permanent abode. And so on, it would contradict the statement that there is an immeasurable appearance of ultimate wisdom. However, meditations that are good at distinguishing meaning, etc., are meditations with conceptualization, and after arising from that continuum, whether one contemplates suchness or is non-conceptual, the signs that arise from them appear like a rainbow newly appearing from the gathering of causes and conditions, so although they are signs of the path, they are also illusions. Furthermore, even if it is said that the essential points of the body are struck, as explained in the Mantra Vehicle, the signs that arise from meditating with conceptualization on deity bodies, bindus, letters, and fire, etc., are also because they arise from the forced blockage of coarse winds. For the most part, they are similar to the former, because they are covered by the coarse radiance of the channels, winds, and bindus, enough.
