Isn't it necessary to focus the mind on the tip of the nose between the eyebrows? If one abides in non-conceptualization, how can one direct the mind to the tip of the Avadhuti channel? If one could reach the goal just by doing that, then the Tirthikas and the Hwa-shang Mahayana school would also be included. They say that, while they themselves, in their own system, focus their minds on the opening of the central channel at the eyebrow level, like the hollow of a cut bamboo tube, and want to meditate with the understanding that these are unreal. However, they are confused about the correct meditation and turn their backs on the definitive meaning. To them, it is said: Many Tirthikas also engage in speculative meditation similar to yours, but some visualize the form of the Avadhuti channel and meditate by pressing on it in a crucial way, and various signs also appear. Therefore, you and they are mostly similar, but from the point of view of the manifestation of signs, they are superior. And we are not the same as those remaining special Tirthikas and you. Some Tirthikas also meditate on non-conceptualization, but they are mistaken in terms of other aspects of view and conduct, not because of the fault of non-conceptualization itself. The Hwa-shang Mahayana is not mistaken in every way, and how can a school be said to be wrong just because it is prohibited by the king's decree? Moreover, all the obstacles to study and contemplation mentioned in the final part of Kamalashila's Stages of Meditation do not apply to their system in the same way. Furthermore, there are various pure proofs of scripture and reason in their system. Defeat in debate is also not necessarily a fault of a wrong school, because defeat in debate can also occur due to the debater's lack of skill or due to chance. Therefore, without clearly knowing the self-view of other schools, one should not rashly say, "This is the same as that." If there are no other obstacles, mere similarity does not lead to any fault or merit. Furthermore, just by your intention, you cannot press on the crucial point of the central channel, nor can you meditate on the emptiness of the Dharmadhatu, it is merely a mental fabrication.
