Having understood the method of complete destruction, the quiescence that should be sought first is the manifestation of the absence of worldly arising and ceasing. Although it is said so, in this vehicle, it is not necessary to seek the two separately, but they are also accomplished simultaneously. The method of how to cultivate quiescence is the nine methods of abiding the mind, namely: placing, continuous placing, returning placing, close placing, taming, pacifying, close pacifying, one-pointedness of mind, and equanimity placing. These are the nine methods. The first is to focus the mind on the object of focus. The second is to repeatedly continue its continuity. The third is to retract and place it on the object of focus. These three are the initial stages, the first stage. The fourth, close placing, is when the mind abides naturally on the object of focus, which is to continuously maintain and protect it. The fifth is when one is slightly weary, remember the virtues of samadhi, generate joy, and cultivate again. The sixth is to know the faults of distraction and conceptualization, and not to accept the arising attachment, aversion, and distraction, but to abide. If weariness and distraction are strong and last for a long time, then the antidotes to those two are needed. The seventh is when the conceptualizations of attachment, aversion, and suffering are weak and arise occasionally, then let them subside on their own, or cut them off without joy or displeasure. These are the practices of the intermediate stage, the second stage. The eighth is that if one is diligent, one can protect the abiding of the mind that is not mixed with sinking, excitement, and distraction as one wishes, but if one is not diligent, it will be harmed by distraction, this is the third stage. The ninth is that from then on, even if one is not diligent, it is an abiding that is free from faults, abiding as one wishes, and able to arise whenever needed, this is the fourth stage. After becoming familiar with these in various ways, there is no difficulty in walking around day and night. In these stages, the five faults that should be abandoned are: Laziness and lack of instruction, Forgetfulness, sinking, and excitement, Non-application and application, These are considered the five faults. Thus, laziness and distraction from the object of focus are the first stage, sinking and excitement are the second stage, and non-application.

Third, interrupt the fourth (dhyana) with effort, that is, exertion. Therefore, in those stages, one must abandon them. The antidotes for abandoning them are eight types of attention: the place and abiding in it; cause and effect; not forgetting the object of focus; recognizing sinking and excitement; the manifest attention of abandoning them; and abiding in peace when calm. Thus it is said. Faith, aspiration, diligence, and thorough training: these four are the antidotes to laziness; mindfulness is the antidote to forgetting the object of focus; vigilance is the antidote to sinking and excitement; the manifest attention of abandoning is the antidote to non-exertion; equanimity, which relaxes effort, is the antidote to excessive effort. The nine stages of mind-abiding are accomplished by six powers: the power of hearing accomplishes placement; the power of thinking accomplishes continuous placement; the power of mindfulness accomplishes reinstatement and close placement; the power of vigilance accomplishes taming and pacifying; the power of diligence accomplishes near pacification and spontaneously arising; the power of familiarity accomplishes the ninth, equal placement. The four stages have four types of attention: the first is the attention of entering with effort; the second is entering with interruption; the third is entering without interruption; and the fourth is the attention of entering spontaneously. Here, only the names are mentioned, and the meaning will be explained in detail elsewhere. For the object of focus, repeatedly and continuously focus the mind. If conceptual thoughts suddenly arise, cut them off immediately. If distraction spreads like a chain, whip the awareness and restrain it. Apply antidotes to afflictions. If discouraged and awareness is weak, generate joy. In the state of natural abiding, do not make any adjustments, because all the methods of mind-abiding mentioned above are included in the practice. At that time, the mind is clear, empty, and without grasping, not distracted, and without bias of near or far. That is calm abiding. Even if one barely manages to do it now, that is it. Apart from the characteristics of pliancy, etc., which have already been understood, it rarely occurs nowadays. Even if it occasionally occurs, it cannot produce outstanding qualities. Regarding vipassanā, there is the distinction between the mundane path and the path of liberation, or whether there is speculation or not, and analytical meditation.
