In order for the terminology of the Dharma to stand firm, it is necessary to explain it. When teaching to a group with weak understanding, there is no need for decisive explanations. Retreats should be no longer than about seven days, and one should immediately enter the actual practice of the main part. In this case, there is no need for introductions. If they are the type of people who practice regularly, then introductions should be given gradually later. As mentioned briefly above, and as clearly written in the texts of internal and external introductions, in detail, it should be like the nature of the Buddhas of the three times, the omniscient teachers and disciples, and the meaning of all the introductions of the scriptures, according to the instructions of the lama. It is very bad to mix in the empty talk, noise, and disorder of ordinary people who are called great practitioners in Tibet. It is important to introduce the essence of meaning: samsara and nirvana, container and contents, external appearances, internal cognitions, the basis of samsara, the path of practice, the newly obtained result, the eight consciousness aggregates. In short, introduce all phenomena of appearance and sound as being without basis or root. Even so, the gathering of interdependent origination will not cease, and the manifestation of various appearances from all doors will not cease. Introduce it as being like an illusion. Introduce the ultimate reality, the sugatagarbha of the sphere of bliss, all-pervasive and constant, transcending all phenomena of samsara and nirvana, appearance and sound, and all the efforts of the basis, path, and result as being pure from the beginning, possessing all aspects. For all three of these, introduce the parts that are actually experienced now in accordance with the experience. Even if you have not actually experienced it now, rely on your own experience and introduce those who can generate certainty through inference. Introduce the ultimate and highest stages of the path by relying on the meaning of the tantric texts, scriptural authority, and valid cognition. In terms of shamatha, some last for months, and in terms of vipashyana, also introduce the distinction between the subsequent attainment of samsara and nirvana without mixing them up. Many former and most of the current Tibetan practitioners, because they do not like what they have not experienced, bring even the perfectly enlightened Buddha down into their own experience, and introduce all the profound paths that they have not experienced as being their own experience, thereby deceiving all the students who trust them. Their experience is like a little bit of alcohol, but they boast of having great qualities and fame.

To borrow experience with the wisdom of contemplation is inconsistent with the Buddha's teachings. Nonsense that contradicts scripture and reason is just empty talk. To confuse the state of Buddhahood with the noble path is to slander all noble beings and the Dharma. For example, if one were to point to a ragged beggar and say, "This is the Chakravartin King," this would not only be an extremely poor way of introducing him, but it would also demean the Chakravartin King, just like violating the king's law. Therefore, when it is necessary to use metaphors to express meaning, it is not contradictory to introduce them in a way that the metaphor symbolizes the meaning. However, if the metaphor itself is introduced as the meaning, and so on, such false introductions, an endless pile of lies, should not destroy the Buddha's teachings. Also, during this time of the three retreats, there should be many Dharma talks, and if there is a need to understand the Dharma and generate certainty, then the nine methods of abiding the mind, the five faults, the eight applications of abandonment, the differences between worldly and transcendental shamatha and vipashyana, etc., it would be good to also cite how appropriate the explanation of shamatha and vipashyana is, and combine it with the object of focus here to explain. Also, it is not good to disturb the mind with too many explanations for those of low intelligence, and in brief, such elaboration is not necessary. So, what is the nature of shamatha and vipashyana? Relying on correct abiding, in order to place the mind on the mind, and in order to distinguish dharmas, is shamatha and vipashyana. That is, without sinking and agitation, without conceptual thought, the mind abiding in clarity and emptiness is shamatha. Abiding in the state of reality as it is, the mind focused on one point is vipashyana. The necessity of practicing shamatha and vipashyana is that all the qualities of worldly and transcendental states arise from the practice of shamatha and vipashyana, in order to obtain those immeasurable benefits, and temporarily in the Samadhiraja Sutra it says, "With the power of shamatha, one proceeds without wavering, with the power of vipashyana, one becomes like a mountain." And in the Sandhinirmocana Sutra it says, "If a sentient being cultivates shamatha and vipashyana, they will be liberated from the bonds of the lower realms and the bonds of signs." Just like that, one practices for those necessities. The order is: with vipashyana that is fully endowed with shamatha, afflictions
