Although there are slight differences in detail, generally speaking, there is not much difference in importance. This can also be analogized to lamas who have heard the teachings of both the Greater and Lesser Vehicles separately. In short, a bad disciple is one who accumulates negativity. Generally, if one has received a secret mantra empowerment and obtained vows, even if one has not received secret mantra teachings, whether it is the Sutra tradition of the Greater or Lesser Vehicle, if one accumulates negativity towards the lama from whom one has received such teachings, not only is the offense great in general, but one also breaks the secret mantra vows. The tantras also say, "Do not slander the teacher, do not disturb the lama's mind." Therefore, the object of the first root downfall is not limited to just the Vajra Master. If a disciple has not received any secret mantra empowerment and has not obtained vows, even if he is just a teacher, since he has not become his own Vajra Master. If one slanders a secret mantra teacher who is connected to the secret mantra teachings, although it is similar to the great sin of slandering a Bodhisattva and a root downfall, it will inevitably arise, but one will not receive the name of "breaking vows," because he himself has not taken vows, so there is nothing to break. Therefore, in order to receive the name of a root downfall, the one who commits the downfall must himself be someone who has entered the secret mantra. Not only does the object of accumulating downfall have to be connected to the secret mantra teachings, but it does not even have to be a secret mantra practitioner. Because this point is not understood, there are very many cases of breaking vows among those who consider themselves to be wise and great, such as Lo Lodrö Sonam Lhundrup. In his autobiography, he said, "I asked Jamyang Chenpo for nine months of Sutra teachings, but I did not receive great secret mantra teachings. Later, my relationship with Jamyang Chenpo was not good, but there was no dissolution of vows." For example, our lamas of the past also asked Je Tsongkhapa for many Sutra teachings such as the Lamrim of the Kadampa, but it is said that later he made many refutations and criticisms. The so-called Jamyang Chenpo is Panchen Shakya Chokden. The so-called former lama seems to refer to Ngorchen Kunga Zangpo. His biography is very long. Because of misunderstanding, the bad habit of not keeping vows has arisen in many lines of teachers and disciples and past lamas.

It is said that something called "eternal existence" has appeared. Furthermore, one cannot be considered one's own guru if there is no Dharma connection, either through oneself or directly or indirectly. The lineage guru should also not be placed in a situation of fundamental downfall. If one were to slander, the fault would certainly be great. Even if one is not a root or lineage guru, generally speaking, there is immeasurable fault in slandering a holy being. Especially a Bodhisattva, and even more so, slandering a Tantric practitioner is an extremely serious matter; this is a digression. Now, let us get to the main point. The third point is to identify Guru Yoga. In the teachings of the Secret Mantra Vajrayana, there is a profound path called Guru Yoga, and for fortunate ones, this is one of the most important methods for attaining Buddhahood in this lifetime. As is known to all, this seems to be in accordance with reality. That is to say, there is not much difference between the Hinayana and Mahayana Sutras and Tantras regarding how to respect a holy guru, remember kindness, and the activities of offering, honoring, and serving. This is clear from examining the Vinaya and the Mahayana Sutras. The way in which all qualities arise from relying on a virtuous friend is also the same. Even the Tirthikas (non-Buddhists) are similar in this respect. The accomplishment of their own activities and siddhis also arises from the blessings received by respectfully relying on the guru. However, there is a difference: Guru Yoga is the name for meditating on the guru. That is, keeping in mind the form of the guru's body, speech, and mind, and focusing on that, continuously maintaining devotion as yoga, this is considered the root of the main practice of the path. This is emphasized in general Secret Mantra and especially in Anuttarayoga. Since it is not widely known in the lower vehicles, the statement that Secret Mantra Vajrayana makes the guru's blessing the path is very reasonable if considered from the perspective of what is primary and general. The fourth point is how to cultivate devotion. From the aspect of the nature of things, the guru may be an emanation of a Buddha or Bodhisattva. Even if not, even if he is just an ordinary person, since the deities of the Yidam have entered into the body, speech, and mind of that Vajra Master in a compliant manner, he performs the benefit of beings, and therefore there is no difference from a real Buddha.
