Arrogance arising from factors such as lineage and birth. When compared to superiors, arrogance diminishes. However, when observing the faults of those inferior, arrogance arises. Those with excessive arrogance do not cultivate faith in superior qualities and disdain those equal or inferior to themselves. Therefore, the pride of arrogance is considered a significant flaw, an action unbecoming of a noble person. Similarly, it is difficult to associate with those who are frequently angry, and those who break secret vows. Boasting among ordinary people about practices like nadi-prana, mudra yoga, deities, mantras, and activities, speaking vaguely and unclearly; indulging in what should not be consumed in public; engaging in what should not be practiced, and claiming these are profound Dharma and high-level vehicles—this is breaking vows, revealing secrets, and engaging in wrong paths. Likewise, coveting the possessions of the Three Jewels, being extremely attached to wealth, not having heard supreme instructions, cherishing only what aligns with one's own behavior, deceiving disciples by presenting false teachings as true Dharma, not knowing the unchanging means of supreme bliss, explaining tantras and instructions without empowerment, being excessively greedy for food and drink, enjoying recklessness due to alcohol consumption, and being extremely attached to the pleasure of ejaculation from sexual union—these are the faults that hinder one from becoming a teacher. The meaning of "profound and so forth" refers to the qualities of a disciple: contemplating the profound and vast emptiness and compassion, delighting in guarding the guru's instructions and vows, being generous without attachment to possessions, knowing the qualities of the Three Jewels and having great faith, focusing solely on the fruit of liberation, respecting what is to be adopted and abandoned as stated in the tantras, not being swayed by worldly paths and instructions, keeping the true instructions received extremely secret, delighting in consuming the possessions of the Sangha, and disliking association with evil friends who pursue the ten non-virtues and other things contrary to the Dharma. Among these, what is indispensable is the ability to keep vows and abandon sinful friends.

O. If one possesses most of those qualities, they are a vessel for the completion stage. If they only possess the two most important qualities, they are a vessel for the generation stage. If one does not even possess that much but relies on a lama, then it is possible that they possess the qualities of a vessel for refuge and the five precepts. Thus, having roughly explained the characteristics of a disciple and a lama, due to the faults of the times, it is difficult to find a teacher who has abandoned all faults and is complete with all qualities. Even if one finds such a teacher, if one's own mind is not pure, one will not see the qualities in one who possesses qualities. One will see faults in one who is without faults. One will not see faults in what is faulty. One will see qualities in what is not a quality. One will see those who are without qualities and possess faults as superior beings. This is due to having accumulated bad karma in previous lives and due to having little merit. Thus, it is said: "The wise respect qualities, not Buddhas, powerful beings, etc. Whoever respects one who has no qualities, that is foolishness, born from non-virtuous actions." If one does not find one who is complete with qualities, one must seek one who possesses the indispensable characteristics as mentioned above. In this profound instruction, one needs a lama who abides in the face and heart of the Buddha. The second point is the way to examine the relationship, including the ancillary meaning. That is, the examination of the relationship between teacher and student should be done before being connected by the Dharma. Whether one has examined it before or not, once one has obtained a Dharma connection, one should rely on the teacher with respect, without finding fault. Even if one has only heard one verse, if one does not regard the teacher as a lama, one will be born as a dog a hundred times and will be born as a leper. Therefore, many later people only say that they have samaya with tantric teachings, but they do not even keep that samaya. They say that those who have characteristics will not have samaya, and they say that no matter how much disrespect, contempt, and improper behavior they do to lamas who have heard many sutra teachings, there is no fault. Many people say such things, and this is only being blessed by demons. Therefore, for those who are not connected by tantric Dharma, it is only that the name of samaya is not given, but in terms of meaning, it is mostly the same. If one were to distinguish between a lama who has heard the sutras of the Mahayana and a lama who has heard the tantras of the secret mantra, then in a secluded place
