To eliminate that fault, it is said that equanimity (Tibetan: བཏང་སྙོམས་) is characterized by non-attachment, being free from afflictions and unmixed. Compassion (Tibetan: སྙིང་རྗེ་) has the aspect of removing obstacles to the happiness of others, and both loving-kindness (Tibetan: བྱམས་པ་) and joy (Tibetan: དགའ་བ་) are the actual desire for the happiness of sentient beings. Therefore, all three are merely thoughts of happiness. Equanimity, on the other hand, also has the characteristic of thinking of happiness from the perspective of non-hatred, and because it is itself non-attachment, it is the thought of placing sentient beings in a state of non-attachment and non-hatred, so it is merely a thought of benefit. Therefore, equanimity is the thought of both benefit and happiness. The nature of the four, such as loving-kindness, is like that, and the way to become immeasurable is to focus on immeasurable sentient beings as the object, and the aspect is to place (sentient beings) in immeasurable happiness, and to want to separate them from immeasurable suffering, etc., focusing on the immeasurable happiness of immeasurable sentient beings, the mental happiness induced by joy and delight, and the nature is the absence of distinction between enemies, friends, and neutrals, wanting all to be equally happy, etc., are necessary. Thus, the characteristics of immeasurable loving-kindness, etc., are like that, and abiding in one-pointedness of mind through possessing such objects and aspects is the samadhi of the four immeasurables. These immeasurables are merely faith and attention, but they are also supreme virtues because they benefit all sentient beings. The fourth point is the division: Those who are steadfast desire their happiness, the distress of suffering and happiness, those with afflictions and those treatises, and thoroughly engage in its suchness. It is said that each of the four immeasurables is also divided into three: focusing on sentient beings, focusing on Dharma, and without focus. "Those with afflictions" and up to there are in terms of focusing on sentient beings, not specifically preventing the grasping of self, sentient beings, and persons, but from wanting sentient beings to be happy, until wanting to place sentient beings with afflictions of attachment and aversion in a state without afflictions, are the four, such as loving-kindness, that focus on sentient beings. Some people think that it is necessary to truly grasp sentient beings, which is unreasonable. Now, behind those that appear as sentient beings, there is no trace of sentient beings, only aggregates, elements, and sources, that is, the collection of aggregates, etc., is mind.

Merely knowing that it is an imputation, focusing on the objects of focus, such as the aggregates, and taking the reason of believing what is said in the Dharma Pitaka that it is merely an imputed person as the basis for the focus, the thought of placing the continuum of the aggregates and so on in between happiness and freedom from afflictions is focusing on the Dharma. Here also, in establishing the Dharma as the object of focus, it is a mistake to say that it is necessary to grasp the aggregates and so on as truly existent Dharmas. There is a great difference between merely not appearing in the aspect of the non-existence of the person and grasping the person as truly existent. Merely not appearing in the aspect of the emptiness of the aggregates and so on, and grasping the Dharma as truly existent, are also extremely different, and this is an indiscernible statement. Furthermore, all three kinds of compassion are present in the noble ones in the manner of being endowed with virtues, because it is said in the Supreme Tantra. Therefore, it is not appropriate to be characterized by attachment to persons and Dharmas. Also, although ordinary beings have not abandoned attachment to sentient beings and Dharmas, although there is no attachment to them in the minds of noble beings, it is not necessary for all the knowledge in their minds to appear in the aspect of realizing their non-existence. Also, considering focusing on the Dharma aggregates and so on and focusing on the Dharma Pitaka as separate boundaries for establishing focusing on the Dharma is also not understanding the meaning of the scriptures. Therefore, the scriptures and so on teach focusing on the Dharma. Seeing that sentient beings and the aggregates and so on are empty of inherent existence, and merely being confused by the appearance of sentient beings and Dharmas, considering that they are exhausted in the realm of suchness is the four immeasurables such as love without focus. That is, the four immeasurables such as love without focus are, in sequence, the arising in the minds of sentient beings of the realization of the true extreme, the exhaustion of confusion, the abiding in the extreme, and the thought of being separated from the two of increase and decrease. The belief that these immeasurables need to rely on meditative stabilization is the conceptual thought of the Hearer-Vaibhashikas. Just as the Sutra-followers and above also believe that they exist in the desire realm, so it is said here as well. In general, with regard to the difference of the skillful means of Bodhisattvas, one should contemplate the immeasurable nature. The fifth point, the uncommon characteristics of the four immeasurables that are the essence of the Great Vehicle path are, as it is said in the Ornament, the stable collection
