When attachment to desire is indulged without restraint due to the absence of antidotes, many misdeeds of body, speech, and mind increase. Furthermore, due to desire and harmful intent, many other afflictions also increase, thus generating endless faults in this life and the next. As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The Bodhisattva with harmful intent, various afflictions and displeasure, and possessed of attachment to desire, touches upon various faults." And the faults are as follows: "Afflictions destroy oneself, destroy sentient beings and discipline, diminish gains with loss, are censured by protectors and teachers alike, cause disputes and unpleasantness, lead to rebirth in unfavorable circumstances, and bring great suffering to the mind due to loss whether attained or unattained." These faults, as stated, are common faults of all afflictions and misdeeds in general. However, since the root or main cause of all these is desire, harmful intent, and displeasure, they are mentioned as faults of those. The second point, the benefit of meditating on the four immeasurables, is as stated in the same text: "All these faults do not arise in those who dwell well in love and so forth; they do not abandon cyclic existence entirely for the sake of sentient beings who are not afflicted." As it is said, love is the antidote to harmful intent, compassion is the antidote to affliction, joy is the antidote to displeasure, and equanimity is the antidote to both attachment to near and far, desire, and harmful intent. Thus, the four immeasurables eliminate those afflictions, and by eliminating those afflictions, the faults of afflictions will not arise later. The way of eliminating them is by relying on the proximate attainment of meditation, etc., which is extensively explained in the Abhidharma, but it is temporarily unnecessary, so it is omitted. Those who say that love and so forth do not eliminate the seeds of afflictions are referring to worldly people and Hearers, speaking in general terms. Even Bodhisattvas with dull faculties and unskilled in means may become like that. For those, those afflictions are merely preventing manifestation and suppressing antidotes, but the four immeasurables of a Bodhisattva skilled in means are the masters of Dharma.

Because it has such a nature, it is also a particularly powerful antidote to destroy the seeds and imprints of afflictions. Therefore, merely being an aspect of loving-kindness does not make it an antidote that destroys seeds, and the distinction must be made that the samadhi of immeasurable loving-kindness can destroy seeds. Because loving-kindness and the like are not contrary to delusion, they cannot completely punish faults. To assume that one is a wise person merely by uttering a few rough colloquial phrases is the conduct of an unwise person. Furthermore, although Bodhisattvas have abandoned the afflictions that arise in the three realms, they still take birth in samsara through the power of their vows and samadhi. All these extraordinary deeds of not abandoning the benefit of sentient beings are due to the power of the four immeasurables. Thus, abandoning afflictions and their faults, and the deeds of the noble ones in benefiting sentient beings, are the main benefits spoken of. Furthermore, explaining the function of the immeasurables from the perspective of the five fruits is also a benefit. As it is said: 'The one who dwells in the abode of Brahma, the wise one always delights in being born. He perfects all retinues and ripens all sentient beings. He is always inseparable from Brahma, and separated from its unfavorable aspects. Even if he becomes negligent, he will not change due to its cause, which is inexhaustible.' Thus. Benefits, various benefits will be explained below. The third point is the essence: Wishing sentient beings to encounter new happiness that they have never had before is loving-kindness; wishing to be separated from the suffering that exists now and to prevent the path of suffering from arising in the future is compassion; the mental ease brought about by rejoicing and being pleased with the present happiness of other sentient beings is joy; and the distinction of an unattached mind that is similar to and possesses the absence of hatred caused by the previous three is called equanimity. Thus, equanimity itself is the foundation of virtuous mind and the like, and it is an equal mind without partiality that arises from the cause of non-attachment and non-hatred. However, the first three, such as loving-kindness, may have a mixture of attachment, which is an affliction, so faults will follow. But equanimity can...
