Although there are those who have made concise guides called "Three Short Guides to the Nāropā's Teachings," it is very important for beginners to tame their minds with preliminary practices. Therefore, the preliminary practices of the glorious Jonangpa tradition are explained in detail. In this way, even the common preliminary practices involve the practice of five objects of focus. When establishing the object of focus for refuge, if there is no need to explain the meaning of refuge at the end of a session, then it ends there. If it is necessary to explain, it should be explained appropriately and suitably according to the specific situation. Here is a brief example. In general, the so-called "taking refuge" refers to seeking protection. If it is said "has taken refuge," this is a past tense statement, meaning that the seeking of protection has been completed. If one has no fear and has obtained autonomy, then there is no need to seek refuge in anyone. Therefore, the person who seeks refuge must have fear, and seeks refuge in order to obtain protection from that fear. Therefore, the cause of taking refuge is being threatened by fear. There are two types of refuge: worldly refuge and transcendental refuge. The first is further divided into refuge solely for this life and refuge that is falsely believed to be ultimate. The first of these is: "People frightened by fear, Mostly take refuge in mountains and forests, Gardens, temples, and stupas, And trees and other places for protection. But these are not true places of refuge, And relying on these places of refuge, One cannot attain liberation and nirvana." As the sutra says, just like trusting a mountain fortress, they even seek refuge in inanimate objects. There are also those who take refuge in non-humans residing in mountains and deities, as well as other local deities, earth lords, the eight classes of gods and demons, nagas, etc., who belong to minor gods or pretas. There are also those who trust kings and other powerful and influential people. These are the thoughts of ordinary, foolish people who have not had their views changed by other doctrines. This kind of refuge is only for this life, and their vision is very short-sighted. The second is to take worldly gods such as Vishnu, Shiva, Samkhya, and Brahma, as well as the great ascetics of the world, as objects of refuge, and to wrongly believe that although they are not true protectors, they are ultimate protectors, and to pray to them for happiness and liberation in this life and the next. They think that they can be equal to the Buddha.

Refuge in those who are outside the Buddhist teachings, such as non-Buddhists. Secondly, there is refuge in the transcendent, which is divided into two types: the refuge of the Lesser Vehicle, the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, whose thoughts and actions are limited, and the refuge of the Great Vehicle, whose scope is vast. Here, it is the Great Vehicle. Within that, there is a slight difference between the common Sutra tradition and the uncommon Tantric tradition. Here, it is done according to the Tantric tradition. Furthermore, although the object of refuge is the transcendent Three Jewels, if the thought is only to obtain happiness in this life or the next life in samsara, then it has not gone beyond worldly refuge. However, because it is focused on a supreme object, it plants a special ultimate habit, and the temporary benefits are also far greater than others. Worldly refuges are merely nominal refuges and are not definitive, and all three of good, non-good, and neutral are present. The so-called transcendent refuge, from the way of taking refuge or in essence, there are both transcendent and non-transcendent aspects, but because the object of refuge is definitely transcendent, that is why it is called that. All refuges of Buddhists that meet the definition are like this. If classified, there are three: Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and the Great Vehicle, but all are generally virtuous, especially based on faith and discipline. As for what the object of refuge is, there are many different views among the various schools. However, if analyzed with reason, all views will not go beyond this range, and these are just their respective statements. There is not much contradiction in contemplation and practice, but there are slight differences in what is accepted and rejected depending on the Great Vehicle and Lesser Vehicle. Therefore, in general, the Sutra and Tantra are the same. The Dharmakaya, which knows the suchness and the extent of all things of the minds of the Tathagatas, and the self-appearing body of the Buddha, which is free from birth and death, and the body with five certainties, and all the sounds of its speech, these three are included in the Sambhogakaya. All the true manifestations of the Buddha, such as the artisan emanation, the birth emanation, and the supreme emanation, are included in the Nirmanakaya.
