One must meditate without acting. The object of gathering the fingers is real, it is the first step of the main object. Furthermore, in the oral instructions of Paṇchen Vibhūticandra, it is said that the oral instructions for four different ways of abandoning the object are as follows: The root of the object of gathering the fingers, which was previously explained, is called the yoga of no thought. It is said to be like a mural in a temple. At that time, due to the fault of not focusing the mind, conceptual thoughts arise, or one falls into a flawed meditation, causing consciousness to become dull and enter a state of neither meditation nor sleep. At this time, one should be guided by the way of looking, like consciousness dissolving into the center of the sky, strongly concentrate consciousness, fully exert awareness, and diligently meditate, which is called the yoga of one-pointedness, like a monkey tied to one door. This is the second turning of the object. After meditating in this way, if the wind rushes upwards, the eye sockets ache, one faints instead of wisdom arising, and stinging pains arise, etc., then, while maintaining the original posture unchanged, rest the mind on the clear awareness, vast and without fabrication, abandoning conceptual thoughts of the past and future, and maintaining clear mindfulness of the present awareness, which is the yoga of self-liberation, like associating with the middle one of three brothers. This is the third turning of the object. In the case of those two objects, if one can only remain for a moment due to being too focused, and then the more focused one becomes, the more scattered one becomes, this is because of the fault of being too tense, one only needs to maintain non-distracted awareness, and without meditating on anything, simply relax. This is the yoga of no effort, like untying a drumstick. This is the fourth turning of the object. These last three objects should also be fully practiced on the basis of the former. Sometimes focus, sometimes relax, sometimes observe the nature of clear awareness, and most of the time meditate with the basis of resting in a state of no effort and no fabrication. This is the fifth turning of the object. At the beginning of the first object of night yoga, or in one of these two situations, enter into the profound dark guidance of the main practice. The second is day yoga, and the difference in its location is: the location of the wealthy, a hillside facing east or west.

It is like that. The place for solitary retreat should be a valley, rock, or tree, etc., that casts a shadow on one's body and is not visible to others. Both should be meditated in a place where a vast sky can be seen. Some lamas believe that one should not meditate where one can see melted butter, lakes, and ponds. Some also believe that one should not look northwest, as the glaring light of the sun and snow mountains can harm the eyes, so those things should not appear in sight. The time is: in the morning, face away from the sun; in the afternoon, it is the same. Avoid the midday sun as it harms the eyes. As it is said, in the morning, face west; in the afternoon, face east to meditate. If there is shade on one side or large shadows from rocks and walls, one can also face north to meditate at noon. As it is said, one should also meditate when there are no yellow clouds, etc. Therefore, do not practice daytime yoga at dusk, dawn, noon, or at other times when there are clouds and wind. Instead, practice nighttime yoga in a dark room. If the conditions of place and time are met, then meditate on this. The object of meditation is the state of having the three unmoving qualities mentioned above. If it is necessary to remove obstacles and enhance progress, then meditate on the latter three key points, such as single-pointed yoga. Therefore, the object of meditation for both day and night yoga is the same. However, the difference lies in what the tantra says: "The yogi should look at the cloudless sky with wide-open eyes." This shows the daytime yoga, and the key to looking is that one needs to look with an angry gaze, with hateful eyes, staring like a seed. Similarly, the key to the object of focus is that instead of looking at the dark sky, one should look at the clear blue sky without clouds, as if there is no difference between it and one's own clear and bright mind. This is the sixth object of focus in the main practice. The second is enhancement and substitution, the substitution practice related to the daytime and maintaining the luminosity of sleep at night. The first is that, in general, the substitution practice of the six-branch yoga is the three ways of forceful union.
