There, the way to practice the preliminaries is: In the first session, perform refuge, bodhicitta, guru yoga, and the generation stage in a comfortable posture. In the subsequent sessions, it is sufficient to do a brief refuge and bodhicitta, and to generate only a little devotion to the guru. If you have not yet gained experience in the two instructions of accumulating and purifying, then in the first session you must also do the Hundred Syllable Mantra and the mandala offering. Therefore, as soon as refuge and bodhicitta are completed, immediately practice the meditation and recitation of Vajrasattva, followed by the continuous practice of mandala offering, guru yoga, and the generation stage from purifying with emptiness (Skt: Śūnyatā) to settling the mind. Among these, if you want to elaborate a little, then do as previously explained; if you want to abbreviate, then during refuge, instead of dissolving the refuge object into yourself, invite it to remain in front of you. During the mandala offering, offer the mandala, and after that, perform the guru yoga from the prayer onwards. Doing so is both easy and to the point. The way to practice the preliminary of a session is the same not only during these three retreats, but also from then on, until the main practice, etc. The actual practice of the three retreats is: Spread a meditation cushion in that dark room. The physical posture is the vajra posture with legs crossed, the spine and back of the neck straight. Bend the neck by pressing the Adam's apple slightly with the chin, keep the lips relaxed, and touch the tip of the tongue to the palate. The gaze of the eyes and the hands can be comfortable in this situation, but since the hands must be held in fists on the thighs during the main practice, do it here as well in order to get used to it: Press the root of the index finger with the thumb, and press the root of the thighs with the fists that are clenched from the outside with the other fingers, and straighten the arms. The eyes should also be in the same direction as in the main practice, rolled upwards as if looking at the sky above, without opening or closing them, but remaining motionless. As soon as the physical posture is adjusted in this way, exhale three times from the nostrils with a "sang" sound in order to eliminate the previous disturbances and distractions of the wind, and to prevent future faults of the wind. After that, from the end of the session, let the wind naturally settle and let it flow freely. The key point of the mind is not to think about anything, not to keep anything in mind, not to deliberately tighten, and not to deliberately loosen, but to look out at the sky, etc.

I am not, nor am I specifically looking back at myself. Do not rely on anything. For whatever may arise, rest relaxed without modification. If you can abide in that and meditate, that is good. If the mind wanders, you must rely on an antidote. There are two ways of wandering: When the mind is abiding, thoughts suddenly arise, and the appearances of objects, etc., clearly appear in the mind. As soon as you realize that the mind has wandered, do not like or dislike it, nor engage in any speculation, but completely cut off the wandering itself. It is enough to maintain the previous way of abiding. Another way is that one thought follows another, wandering into various thoughts, and spreading for a long time, which is a great fault. However, as soon as this is caught by mindfulness, you must ensure that this wandering and spreading of thoughts does not happen again. Whenever you wander, make a strong intention from time to time to catch it with mindfulness. In a state of not thinking about anything, gather awareness inwardly. Repeatedly check whether the mind is abiding or not abiding, wandering or not wandering. In this way, the tendency to wander and spread will become smaller and smaller, and before long it will stop. Meditate in this way, focusing on one point. At the end of the session, dedicate the merit as before. During the breaks between sessions, also maintain the mind's unconstructed state, and do not speak idle chatter. As it is said: "Do not regard anything as a fault, experience the state of not being anything, do not desire signs of warmth or other experiences. Although it is taught as non-meditation, do not indulge in laziness and indifference." It is like that. In all sessions and breaks, do not expect to become better, nor suspect that faults will arise. Abandon thoughts of violent behavior and attachment to enjoyment, etc. Always protect the mind of bodhichitta from degenerating. Clothes, etc., should be suitable for the temperature, sleep well at night, avoid sleep during the day, and meditate with full effort during the sessions. It is good to lengthen the duration of the sessions. The seventh instruction, the instruction on the three solitudes, is complete. At this time, have them meditate for two or three days, and in the meantime, if it is pleasing and necessary, explain in detail the benefits of solitude, the nature of calm and insight, and the key points of the three solitudes. After they have fully understood this, teach the practice. End.
