Although the two manifestations are similar in terms of showing only the manner, they are not the same entity. Similarly, here too, understand that although the two, abandoning the residue of the aggregates and not abandoning the residue of the Lord of Death and afflictions, may be the same in showing the manner, they do not conform to the single pure form of the deity to be meditated upon. Furthermore, most of the later commentators on the generation stage of the Wheel of Time, although they are reputed to be very learned, the common fault that exists in all of them is that they do not distinguish between the actual reality and the mental cultivation of the generation stage, and there are many meaningless debates that do not understand the terminology of the Dharma. If you understand what I am going to explain in this way, the darkness will be dispelled. What is it? The vague mental cultivation that has not obtained clarity in the generation stage is only a mixture of appearance and general meaning. For the mandala deities in which clarity arises for one individual at one time, there is no distinction between good and bad lineage, because everything is contained within the practitioner's own mind. These are merely the forms of the objects of experience that arise in the yogi's own mind through meditative absorption. In reality, they are neither Buddhas nor Bodhisattvas. They are not transcendent either, because they are reflections of the mind of samsara. They should not be called worldly deities either, because they are not contained by other separate lineages, so the yogi's own mental appearances alone cannot be given the name of worldly deities. Furthermore, since the scriptures explain these as objects of purification, they are not regarded as defiled objects or truly worldly phenomena. For the time being, from the point of view of worldly convention, until the attainment of common great accomplishment or supreme accomplishment, the practitioner himself is not regarded as a deity. All those called wisdom deities and worldly deities are named from lineages other than the practitioner himself. If that common great accomplishment is attained, then the practitioner himself becomes the deity of mantra. Although its own nature has not transcended samsara, and is therefore worldly, it is not called a worldly deity because the reasons are the same as previously stated.
