Whether wise or foolish, monastic or lay, everyone is doing all sorts of things, both virtuous and non-virtuous. In reality, those who are intelligent and aspire to be wise do not wish for the flourishing of the Dharma. They prefer to have more people serving in the military than becoming monks. They do not want the Three Jewels to be elevated, nor do they want monks to have power. They want wicked people to be more powerful. It must be investigated, what does it mean for the Three Jewels to be elevated? Most of those who are called Geshes are like this. They use their attachment to the Guru and the Buddha as an excuse to serve local officials. They use their attachment to listening, contemplation, and meditation as an excuse to engage in evil thoughts, harsh actions, and foul language. They use their attachment to the Sangha as an excuse to serve relatives or closely connected wicked people, both male and female. In the past, King Ashoka offered his kingdom to the Sangha, and King Tri Relpachen offered the first gate to the Sangha, the second to the king, and the third to the ministers. This was not the act of a senile old man. Cutting off the wealth of the Three Jewels and transforming it for the food, clothing, and children of ordinary people does not even have the name of benefiting sentient beings. All, wise and foolish, do not understand this. The wise people of Tibet, if you pursue the meaning of benefiting sentient beings, they consider it to be accumulating the villagers' grain. Isn't this ridiculous? When Lama Phagpa used thirteen hundred thousand laborers to build a monastery, all the workers slandered him and cursed him to die. But his actions were not sinful, nor were they inappropriate, but a very great undertaking. The great accomplished Changchub Gyaltsen, fearing rebellion from the people, did not cut down secular trees, but dismantled all the old monasteries and used them to cover the Dzong (fortress), and no one said it was inappropriate. The secular people were disappointed, thinking that his actions were not Dharma at all, but were sending the entire country to hell. Now, for example, even if you collect only one bre of grain from each villager for virtuous deeds, they will complain that it is not enough and cry out in pain. Therefore, if you collect even more wealth than this and use it for virtuous deeds, not only is there no sin, but the merit will increase even more.
