Like a lord, like a precious jewel with form inside the earth, similarly, sentient beings who are suddenly obscured by the stains of afflictions also possess this element. The analogy spoken in this way is the meaning of direct meaning. If the analogy spoken there is definitive meaning, then the Tathāgatagarbha will become a lump, a round thing. Thus it is said. Its meaning is this: seeing the Buddha inside the lotus is obscured by the lotus; seeing the barley and other fruits inside the husk is obscured by the husk. By this reasoning, the nine analogies are also applied in the same way, seeing that the Tathāgatagarbha exists in sentient beings is obscured by the stains of their respective afflictions, which means that the obscurer and the obscured are combined as an analogy, but it is not applied to the meaning in the same way as it exists in the analogy. Nowadays, many who claim to be scholars understand analogy as a definition, so please distinguish between analogy and definition. Also, some say: if there is a Buddha in sentient beings, then the so-called person (pudgala, 人) is the Tathāgatagarbha of sentient beings. Those who say this are saying that it is an impure Buddha-mother. This should also be distinguished in this way: there are two kinds of Buddhas, one with single purity and one with double purity. Therefore, although there is no Buddha with double purity in sentient beings, there is a Buddha with double purity. Some say: there is no Buddha with single purity. If there is no Buddha with single purity, then there will be no Buddha with double purity, as the glorious Dharmakīrti said: If one does not exist, both will be destroyed. It is also established by reason that if one does not exist, how can two exist? In the mantra vehicle it is also said: The Tathāgata who is liberated from the beginning. In the sutras it is also said: All dharmas are naturally in nirvāṇa, etc. Unborn, unceasing, originally peaceful, the nature of nirvāṇa is established. Such things are also contrary to the teachings of Maitreya. Natural nirvāṇa, natural Buddhahood, natural enlightenment, natural luminosity, etc., have the same meaning. These are the answers to those who claim to be scholars, and there is no end to the answers to the wrong views of fools.

Therefore, I will not elaborate here. Dharmakirti (Chos kyi Grags pa) said, "Answers to wrong views are endless, and I will not elaborate on them here." Therefore, the meaning of being ignorant of the ultimate truth is: although many people think that merely the non-establishment of anything is the ultimate truth, that is not the ultimate truth. That is merely the ultimate truth in name, which is the same as the conventional truth. As it says in the "Two Truths": "The cessation of birth, etc., is also completely in accordance with the ultimate truth." And in the "Commentary on the Mind": "The conventional is explained as emptiness, emptiness alone is the conventional." And in the "Perfection of Wisdom Sutra": "Form is emptiness, emptiness is form." The meaning of this is also the same, because all conventional phenomena appear while being empty, and are empty while appearing. The meaning of appearing while being empty is that they appear as if they exist, but in reality, they are empty of inherent existence. The meaning of being empty while appearing is that although they are empty of inherent existence in the ultimate sense, they merely appear. In the "Ornament of the Sutras," it is also said: "Such two appearances, exist in that, their essence is non-existent." This clearly explains it. In short, because of ignorance of the two truths, which are the basis, they slander that there is no Sugata-garbha of the ultimate truth. Therefore, because of ignorance of the two accumulations of the path, they regard the accumulation of wisdom, which is to be known individually by wisdom, as useless. Therefore, because of ignorance of the union of the two kayas, which is the result, they slander that the ultimate Dharmakaya is not permanent. Therefore, they slander the final teachings that show the Buddha as permanent, as well as the tantra classes, the latter three of the Five Treatises of Maitreya, the collections of Madhyamaka praises, and the treatises of Asanga (Thogs med), in order, as interpretable, not definitive, not Madhyamaka but Mind-Only. Therefore, they hold wrong views towards those special individuals who consider these as definitive, calling them Mind-Only, eternalists, and Samkhya. Therefore, they accumulate the karma of abandoning the Dharma, which is heavier than the five heinous crimes. Maitreya (Byams Mgon) said that the karma of abandoning the Dharma is heavier than the five heinous crimes, because if someone repeatedly relies on bad friends, thereby harboring ill will towards the Buddha, or kills parents, Arhats, or commits the act of dividing the Sangha, if they truly contemplate the nature of reality, they can quickly be liberated from it.
