May the earth be clear! May the lotus garden of profound meaning flourish! May the darkness of wrong views be dispelled! This is a verse for the intermediate section. Some also say: In Nagarjuna's 'Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way,' it says, "There is no permanence, no annihilation." Because this appears as praise of the Buddha, there is no permanent, stable, peaceful Yungdrung Buddha. The meaning of this is that the interdependent phenomena are said to be without permanence or annihilation. If it is not so, and the noble Nagarjuna does not accept the permanent, stable Yungdrung Buddha, then in the 'Hundred Treatises on Wisdom,' it says, "The supreme state of Yungdrung, if one does not strive on the basis of goodness, all the perfections, seen and unseen, tremble like bubbles in water." And in the 'Praise of the Middle Way,' it says, "How can you abandon the actual contradiction of your own nature, the Dharmakaya, which is permanent, stable, and peaceful?" Therefore, please do not slander Nagarjuna. Some also say: If the Dharmakaya is viewed as permanent, it will turn into a permanent view. They say that the so-called permanent view and annihilation view refer to the fact that non-Buddhists consider the non-established self of a person to be permanent, and that they consider impermanent things like Ishvara and Brahma to be permanent, which is called the permanent view. And the materialists consider the past and future lives and the law of karma, which exist, to be non-existent, which is called the annihilation view. If viewing impermanence as impermanence and viewing permanence as permanence also becomes annihilation view and permanent view, which sutra says this? Which tantra speaks of it? Which treatise is it taken from? By what reasoning is it established? When asked these questions, they say: There is no opportunity to see the profound sutra pitaka, let alone the tantras. It is taken from one's own self-serving treatises, and it is established by the reasoning of non-Buddhists. Some also say: There is a Buddha who is spontaneously accomplished without arising or ceasing, but there is no permanent Buddha. This is like saying there is heat and burning but no fire, there is moisture and wetness but no water. Because any phenomenon that does not arise or cease is the nature of permanence, this is established by scripture and reason. Some also think that there are few who believe in a permanent Buddha, and many who believe there is not, so they say to follow the majority. Then in the world, there are few who act according to the Dharma, and many who do not, should we follow them?

it will become necessary to follow them. Some also say that many people who believe there is no permanent Buddha have received benefits, have many disciples, have manifested clairvoyance, have become long-lived, and have flown in the sky, therefore one should follow them. Then, after the Buddha passed into nirvana, it is said that the Bhikshu Mahadeva did not have such a large gathering of followers, so it would become necessary to follow him. Various non-Buddhists are long-lived due to the power of the wind vessel, and others have the ability to perform contaminated clairvoyance, fly in the sky, draw mandalas, and emit fire from dust, so it is reasonable to follow them. Some also say that if there is a permanent Buddha, then sentient beings must also have it. If sentient beings have the Buddha, then that alone is enough, so why bother striving on the path? The answer to this is that for those who say that sentient beings are Buddhas, you and I both share that fault. It is not saying that it already is, but that it exists, just as having treasure underground is not enough, the treasure must manifest and function, and the work of digging must be done, as explained in the sutras by combining metaphor and meaning. In the Angulimaliya Sutra, it is also said: Why churn milk and not water? Because there is no essence in water. Thus, combining metaphor and meaning, if sentient beings do not have the Buddha, then striving on the path would be meaningless, and precisely because sentient beings have the Buddha, in order to manifest what has not yet manifested, one must diligently accumulate merit and wisdom. Therefore, among the three philosophical views that have arisen in Tibet, one should abandon the view that sentient beings are Buddhas and the view that sentient beings do not have the Buddha. Thirdly, one should adopt the view that sentient beings have the Buddha and the view that sentient beings are not Buddhas. When it is said that sentient beings have the Buddha, it refers to having the Dharmakaya, not the Rupakaya, because the Dharmakaya is unconditioned and the Rupakaya is conditioned. Regarding this, some also say that in the Tathagatagarbha Sutra and the Uttaratantra Shastra, it says: The Buddha is like the pollen in a lotus, the bee in honey, the essence in chaff, gold in filth, treasure and sprouts in the earth, fruit peel, the image of the Victorious One in tattered clothes, and in the womb of a wicked woman
