In this world, those who act according to Dharma are few, and those who do not are many, so one must follow those who do not. Some say that many people who believe there is no eternal Buddha have many disciples who benefit beings. Those with clairvoyance appear, and those with long lives appear. Those who can fly in the sky appear, so one should follow them. If that is the case, then after the Buddha passed into Nirvana, the Bhikshu Mahadeva did not gather a larger retinue, so because there is such a saying, one must follow him. Various non-Buddhists are long-lived by the power of the wind vessel, and furthermore, they are able to perform contaminated clairvoyance and fly in the sky, draw mandalas, and produce fire from dust, so it is reasonable to follow them. Some say that if there is an eternal Buddha, then sentient beings must have Buddhahood. If sentient beings have Buddhahood, then that alone is sufficient, so why strive on the path? The answer to this is that for those who say that sentient beings are Buddhas, both you and I should bear that fault together. It is not that sentient beings are Buddhas, but that sentient beings have Buddha-nature, just as there is treasure underground, it is not enough just to have it, the treasure must be revealed and put to use, so one must do the work of digging, as the Sutras explain by combining metaphor and meaning. The Angulimaliya Sutra also says: Why churn milk and not water? Because there is no essence in water. The Sutras also explain by combining metaphor and meaning, therefore, if sentient beings do not have Buddha-nature, then striving on the path is meaningless, and precisely because sentient beings have Buddha-nature, in order to reveal what has not been revealed, one must strive very hard to accumulate merit and wisdom. Therefore, among the three schools that have arisen in Tibet, one should abandon the view that sentient beings are Buddhas and the view that sentient beings do not have Buddha-nature. Thirdly, one should adopt the view that sentient beings have Buddha-nature, and not say that sentient beings are Buddhas. That sentient beings have Buddha-nature means that they have the Dharmakaya, but not the Rupakaya, because the Dharmakaya is unconditioned and the Rupakaya is conditioned. To this, some say that the Tathagatagarbha Sutra and the Uttaratantra Shastra say: The Buddha is like a lotus, filth, honey, bees, husks, essence, gold in impurity, treasure in the ground, and sprouts.

Just as the husk of grain and tattered clothes contain the form of a Buddha, the womb of a wicked woman contains a ruler, and the earth contains the essence of jewels, so too, sentient beings, obscured by the sudden defilements of afflictions, possess this element of the Tathagatagarbha. This, spoken of as example and meaning, is provisional. If the example and meaning spoken of there were definitive, the Sugata-essence would become lumpy and granular. That is what is said. The meaning of that is this: the Buddha within the lotus is obscured by the lotus; the grains such as barley within the husk are obscured by the husk. Applying the nine examples in the same way, the Tathagatagarbha is seen to exist in sentient beings, but is obscured by the defilements of their respective afflictions. This is a combination of obscurer and obscured through example and meaning, but the meaning is not applied to the actual meaning in the same way as in the example. Nowadays, many who fancy themselves as scholars take the example as the characteristic of the definition, so please remember to distinguish between example and definition. Furthermore, some say: if sentient beings have Buddhahood, then what is called a "person" is the Tathagatagarbha of sentient beings. Saying this is like saying there is a Buddha who has not been purified of defilements, which is unreasonable. This must also be distinguished in this way: there are two kinds of Buddhas, those with one purity and those with two purities. Therefore, sentient beings do not have a Buddha with two purities, but there is a Buddha with one purity. Some say: there is no Buddha with one purity. If there is no Buddha with one purity, then there will also be no Buddha with two purities, as the glorious Dharmakirti said: Because one of them does not exist, both will also be destroyed. This is also established by reasoning; if one does not exist, how can two exist? In the Mantrayana teachings, it is also said: "The Tathagata who is primordially liberated." And in the Sutras, it is said: "All phenomena are naturally in Nirvana," and so forth. It also contradicts the words of Maitreya: "Unborn, unceasing, primordially peaceful, the nature of Nirvana is established." Naturally in Nirvana, naturally enlightened, naturally awakened, naturally luminous, and so forth, are the same in meaning.
