Because the essence of the Tathagatagarbha is free from elaboration, it is reasonable for sentient beings to have both Buddha and samsara. So it is said. Furthermore, it is also said in the same text that the Tathagatagarbha, the Dharmadhatu, the clear light of the nature of mind, and Suchness are all of the same meaning. And because these are immutable, they are also said to be uncompounded. Therefore, since the Tathagatagarbha is said to be Suchness, which is immutable and free from elaboration, it is because it is the Suchness that is immutable and free from elaboration. With the tenets of Dharma Lord Sakya Pandita firmly in mind, it is still necessary to understand the tenets of Sakya Pandita. Some say that Buton Rinpoche does not acknowledge the Tathagatagarbha at all, but this is simply because they have not seen Buton's works. Buton explains in the commentary on the Perfection of Wisdom that sentient beings have the Tathagatagarbha, but in the Clear Exposition he says that they do not. Shakyamuni Buddha and Maitreya Bodhisattva say in the Sutra of No Increase No Decrease and the Uttaratantra that the Tathagatagarbha is heavily stained with the manifestation of the three poisons, latent habits, and the Suchness of ordinary beings. When the Tathagatagarbha is in a state of being more or less pure and more or less impure, that Dharmata is the Suchness of the Bodhisattva, and that entity is called a Bodhisattva. When the Tathagatagarbha is in a state of being completely purified of all stains, that Dharmata is the Suchness of the Buddha, and that entity is called a Buddha. Although the Tathagatagarbha is present in all sentient beings, Bodhisattvas, and Buddhas, its essence does not change for better or worse. For example, although space pervades all vessels, such as clay pots and gold vessels, the essence of space does not change for better or worse. Acharya Asanga elaborates on this by combining it with the sutras and clearly explains it in the commentary on the Uttaratantra. In short, Maitreya says: In order to distinguish the differences in the Suchness of ordinary beings, noble ones, and fully enlightened Buddhas, this essence of the Victorious One is taught to sentient beings who see that Suchness. And: impure, not impure, pure, and completely pure, in order, are sentient beings, Bodhisattvas, and Tathagatas.
