Those who hold to the definitive meaning say that holding the Tathagatagarbha and Dharmakaya to be permanent will turn into eternalism. The reason for this is that in the Uttaratantra it says, "Samsara and Nirvana, because they are realized as equal, are permanent." In the commentary on this, Asanga quotes the Agama of the Ratnavali, "If one views conditioned phenomena as impermanent, that is to view them as annihilation, which is not a correct view. If one views Nirvana as permanent, that is to view it as eternal, which is not a correct view." This quote is explained literally. This is a perverse argument, because it is at the time of explaining that the Dharmakaya, which possesses two kinds of purity, is pure, self, bliss, and permanent, and especially at the time of proving permanence. If viewing the Dharmakaya as permanent turns into eternalism and becomes an incorrect view, then how can it be a knower of the equality of samsara and nirvana? Whose rule is it to posit something that is not a proof of the Dharmakaya being permanent as a proof of the Dharmakaya being permanent? Furthermore, following the Ratnavali Agama, "The Dharmakaya of the Tathagata is the perfection of permanence, the perfection of bliss, self, and purity. Any sentient beings who see the Dharmakaya in this way see it correctly." And, "Bhagavan, those sentient beings are not perverted, they see it correctly. They are the heart-sons of the Bhagavan." How can this be directly contradictory? Although they claim to be wise themselves, they are merely conceited. Furthermore, those who consider the later teachings to be of definitive meaning say that if one views conditioned phenomena as impermanent, it will turn into annihilationism, and if one views Nirvana as permanent, it will turn into eternalism, which is a mistaken statement. Viewing conditioned phenomena as impermanent, and viewing Nirvana as permanent, are not annihilationism and eternalism, but are correct views. Saying this will not contradict the earlier and later sutras, and Asanga's commentary will not contradict itself earlier and later. Saying this, positing the view of impermanence as a correct view as a proof that the Dharmakaya is permanent is like positing the existence of yaks in the north as a proof that there are tigers in the south, the equality of samsara and nirvana.

Because it is not related to your own proof, it is called an unrelated stump. Then, this teaching is not to be explained literally, nor is it a wrong translation. So, how should it be understood? Its meaning is that if the nature of conditioned phenomena is seen as impermanence to be reduced, it becomes nihilistic view; if the nature of nirvana is seen as permanence to be added, it becomes eternalistic view, and it becomes an incorrect view. Saying this, Shakya, Maitreya, and Asanga are in agreement. Then, for this, there is nothing to be removed, and there is nothing to be retained. As it is said later, for the nature of samsara and nirvana, there is neither addition nor subtraction, neither removal nor retention, because it is the Dharmakaya realized in the equality of the self-existent, permanent nature. Therefore, the Dharmakaya with two purities is established as the other shore beyond permanence, that is its meaning. Explaining it this way, the earlier and later sutras do not contradict, and it agrees with the treatises. If you think that the earlier and later explanations do not contradict, and that combining the nature of samsara and nirvana is your own wisdom, then it is not, because Asanga's commentary says: The door of the Dharmadhatu, this actually proves that samsara itself is nirvana. So, do you think that reducing and increasing is your own wisdom? It is not, because the commentary says that the impermanence of samsara cannot be reduced, and the permanence of nirvana cannot be increased, thus it is proven. This is what the many wise teachers of the snowy land have not found, and it is the wish-fulfilling jewel-like good saying that I have found from the ocean of Asanga's treatises. Said: The definitive meaning spoken by the sons of the Buddhas, The root lineage masters have clarified, Like the moon rising on the white ground, Again, it is clarified by Manjushri's name. This is the intermediate verse. Some also think that if the third turning of the wheel is the ultimate meaning, then what is the use of teaching the first and second turnings of the wheel? It would be appropriate to teach the ultimate meaning only at the beginning. If one is capable of being a vessel for teaching the ultimate meaning, then the King of the Shakyas, who possesses skillful means and compassion, would not be stingy with the Dharma, but even though he very much wanted to teach it, it was because one was not a vessel. The reason for this is also that the Sugata-garbha, which is permanent and stable, is the object of speculative
