Having transgressed the precepts, having violated the samaya (vow) of secret mantra, having harmed the Three Jewels, having abandoned the sacred Dharma, having slandered the noble Sangha, having disrespected father and mother, having disrespected the Khenpo (preceptor) and Acharya (teacher), having disrespected fellow practitioners, and so forth. In short, all those sins and downfalls that are obstacles to higher realms and liberation, and that are the cause of samsara and the lower realms, I confess before all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding in the ten directions, including the great Vajradhara (the Holder of the Vajra), and the Sangha. I do not conceal, I do not hide. By confessing in this way, I will abide in happiness; if I do not confess, it will not be so.' Repeat this three times. Secondly, specifically confessing the fourteen root downfalls of mantra, which cause birth in the unparalleled hell realm, with strong remorse: 'Because the Vajradhara, truly accomplished, speaks of following the guru, therefore, disrespecting the guru is said to be the first root downfall.' The first downfall, I confess. 'Transgressing the teachings of the Sugata (Buddha), is said to be the second downfall.' The second downfall, I confess. 'Being angry with Vajra brothers, is the third fault.' The third downfall, I confess. 'Abandoning love for sentient beings, the Victorious Ones say is the fourth.' The fourth downfall, I confess. 'Bodhicitta (the mind of enlightenment), is the root of Dharma, abandoning it is the fifth.' The fifth downfall, I confess. 'Slandering the Dharma of one's own or another's philosophical system, is the sixth.' The sixth downfall, I confess. 'Revealing secrets to sentient beings who are not yet mature, is the seventh.' The seventh downfall, I confess. 'The skandhas (aggregates) are the nature of the five Buddhas, disparaging them is the eighth.' The eighth downfall, I confess. 'Having doubt about phenomena that are naturally pure, is the ninth.' The ninth downfall, I confess. 'Always being loving towards the wicked, is considered the tenth.' The tenth downfall, I confess. Regarding women who are empty in nature, there are fourteen reprehensible actions. I confess these fourteen transgressions. If mantra practitioners can avoid these, they will surely attain accomplishment. The fourth part is about taking vows, which are divided into three categories: Pratimoksha vows, Bodhisattva vows, and Mantra vows. First, for lay Vajra holders and Bhikshu Vajra holders, they should understand what they have promised according to their respective Pratimoksha vows, and with a mind of protection, ensure that they do not violate them again. From today onwards, I will not kill, I will not steal the property of others, I will not engage in sexual activity, and I will not speak falsely. I will completely abstain from alcohol, which leads to many faults. I will not sit on high and large beds, and I will not eat at inappropriate times. I will abstain from fragrances, garlands, ornaments, and singing and dancing. Just as Arhats never kill, etc., I will also abstain from killing, etc. May I quickly attain unsurpassed Bodhi. The second part is the Bodhisattva vow: Just as the Buddhas of the past generated the mind of Bodhi, and how Bodhisattvas abide in the practices, I will generate the mind of Bodhi for the benefit of sentient beings, and like them, I will practice accordingly. The third part is the Secret Mantra vow: I pray that all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and their retinues, as well as the heroes and Yoginis, listen to me. I, named Vajra Mind, from this time onwards, until the essence of Bodhi, just as the Buddhas of the three times have realized the unsurpassed mind of Bodhi, I will generate it. I will firmly uphold the three vows: the vow of discipline, the vow of gathering virtuous Dharmas, and the vow of benefiting sentient beings. Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha are the unsurpassed Three Jewels. From today onwards, I will firmly uphold the vows arising from Buddha Yoga. For the great Vajra family, I will also truly hold the Vajra bell and scepter mudra. For the great Ratna family, I will constantly give the four kinds of generosity six times a day. For the pure Padma family, which arises from the great mind of Bodhi, I will uphold all the true Dharma of the three vehicles, inner, outer, and secret.
