As a symbol of the inseparability of father (Yab) and mother (Yum), the mandala is decorated with beautiful colors at the four corners. The Five Dhyani Buddhas, namely Vairochana, Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amitabha, and Amoghasiddhi, symbolize the purification of the five skandhas—form (rūpa), feeling (vedanā), perception (saṃjñā), mental formations (saṃskāra), and consciousness (vijñāna)—naturally accomplishing the five kayas (pañcakāya) and five wisdoms (pañcajñāna). The Five Mothers (Yum lnga) symbolize the purification of the four elements—earth, water, fire, and wind—and benefit beings through the four activities. Appearing as Heruka (Sems dpa') and Yogini (Yum) symbolizes the complete purification of the objects of the eight consciousness aggregates. The Six Munis (Thub pa drug) symbolize the purification of the six afflictions and the perfection of the six pāramitās. The union of Samantabhadra (Kunzang) father (Yab) and mother (Yum) symbolizes the inseparability of primordial purity (ka dag) and spontaneous presence (lhun grub), the complete purification of method (thabs) and wisdom (shes rab), appearance and emptiness (snang stong). The four gatekeepers symbolize benefiting beings with the four immeasurables. The five round vases symbolize the original Dharmakaya (chos sku), the great perfection of primordial purity (ka dag), without beginning or end, abiding in the form of the vase body of a youth (zhon nu bum pa'i sku). The five colors symbolize possessing the five wisdoms. The complete ornaments symbolize peace (zhi) and wrath (khro) existing in the form of light. The vajra in between symbolizes self-awareness, unchanging. The five neck garlands symbolize the purification of the five afflictions in appearance. The five connected threads symbolize compassion being all-pervasive. The white conch shell (shel dkar) and mirror symbolize awareness (rig pa) being without impurity, emptiness and clarity (stong gsal) unobstructed. The peacock umbrella symbolizes the four lamps dissolving into the dharmadhatu (dbyings), revealing clarity. The four victory banners beautifully arranged in the four corners symbolize the Buddha's teachings never declining. The four streamers beautifully arranged in the four directions symbolize the fame spreading in the ten directions. Extensive offerings and tormas symbolize the need to please the guru, yidam, and dakini. Furthermore, the various decorations and arrangements symbolize that the empowerment (dbang bskur) must possess the five perfections. The Vajra Master (rdo rje slob dpon) with ornaments symbolizes that at the time of empowerment, great blessings naturally descend. Having said this, the Vajra Master uses a golden needle to reveal the deity to the disciple. The above is the preparation for the main practice (dngos gzhi). Now for the actual empowerment, the disciple offers the mandala (maNDal) and recites: Samantabhadra (Kunzang) father (Yab) and mother (Yum). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
